David Edgar expects Rangers summer signing to leave in January, he wants out
David Edgar has explained why he expects Joe Rothwell to depart Rangers in January, despite the midfielder only arriving in the summer.
Rothwell has struggled to get a look-in under Danny Rohl, with his most recent appearance coming as a late substitute against Celtic on 2 November.
The former Leeds United midfielder’s most recent start, meanwhile, came in Rangers’ 3-0 loss to Brann in the Europa League on 23 October.
That has led to talk that Rothwell could be on his way out of Ibrox as early as next month, with Edgar having his say on the matter.
Joe Rothwell wanted by Sheffield United and Derby County
Reports emerged last week suggesting Sheffield United want to sign Rothwell from Rangers to help with their challenge of climbing up the English Championship.
On Sunday, meanwhile, it emerged that fellow English club Derby County also want to sign Rothwell, meaning a possible transfer tug-of-war.
Rothwell starred for Leeds in the Championship last season, making his lack of impact at Ibrox all the more surprising.
When it was pointed out on X it now looks likely Rangers will get rid of the 30-year-old, Heart & Hand owner Edgar replied: “I think we are. He wants to go and we want him to go.”
What Rangers sources have said about Rothwell at Rangers
Rothwell’s arrival at Rangers in the summer was hailed as a great piece of business, with the midfielder arriving from Bournemouth.
However, he has started just five Scottish Premiership games – and none at all in the past couple of months – which suggests he has no future in Glasgow.
As per Sofascore, he has averaged a rating of 6.70 this campaign, highlighting just how underwhelming he has been.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News earlier this month, former Rangers player Derek Ferguson suggested Rothwell arrived at Rangers carrying a bit too much weight.
Whether it is fitness reasons or just down to a lack of quality, Rothwell is not fancied at Rangers and there is no reason to keep hold for any longer.
The good news is that there is growing interest from down south, meaning the Gers should be able to land a decent fee.
