Danny Rohl has perfect Djeidi Gassama replacement at Rangers after Ferencvaros saga

Danny Rohl may as well leave Djeidi Gassama out of Rangers’ matchday squads until his inevitable sale in January.

The Bears crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday after Ferencvaros beat Rangers 2-1, in a performance that had few positives.

Gassama was slammed for his body language after being substituted on the hour mark by Rohl, and alarm bells are starting to ring.

Spanish side Villarreal have expressed an interest in Gassama, with a January move now possible and a sensible move for Rangers to make if they can secure immediate profit.

Due to this, it only makes sense for Rohl to start experimenting for the Frenchman’s replacement, and one man in particular showed that he is ready to step up after his display in Budapest.

Findlay Curtis is ready to step up for Rangers

There have been calls to terminate Gassama’s deal at Ibrox after such a poor showing against Ferencvaros, but Findlay Curtis didn’t disappoint off the bench.

Curtis has been given an unfair amount of game time this season, and his performances have deserved more.

Yes, Rohl is backed into a corner over the lack of quality that Rangers have, but he decides to keep picking the same players who are underperforming each week, like Gassama.

Curtis is right there and was once again effective in his short cameo against Ferencvaros.

Hopefully, Curtis’ display was enough to convince Rohl to make a change when Rangers face Hibernian on Monday evening at Ibrox.

If he doesn’t, then it could be another worrying sign in the emerging pattern of Rohl.

If it continues, any progression will start to disappear under the German, who has his hands tied.

Danny Rohl now faces formation dilemma

We’ve seen that Rohl likes to use a five-at-the-back formation with wing-backs who bomb down either side, but he can mix it up.

However, if Rohl continues to use this type of system, it will ask less of the natural wingers who are currently contracted to Rangers, which isn’t great news.

Historically, the Gers have had success from formations that utilise wingers, and now more than ever, Rohl needs to be using players like Curtis.

That’s not to say that the German head coach won’t use wide forwards, as it’s something he’s already done, but it’s clear to see that deploying a 4-2-3-1, or a similar variant, is the way to go.

It would get the most out of Curtis, who simply needs to be given a chance over Gassama.
