Ally McCoist lost for words at ‘unbelievable’ Rangers moment vs Ferencvaros – ‘Oh my goodness’

It was a familiar story for Rangers in the Europa League during their showdown against Ferencvaros.

Although Bojan Miovski’s stunning overhead kick gave Danny Rohl’s men the lead in the 27th minute, the visitors crumbled.

Some catastrophic defending saw Bence Otvos equalise on the stroke of half-time, before the Hungarian side took the lead through Barnabas Varga with 18 minutes left.

Rangers were warned by Varga’s incredible goalscoring record heading into the game, and it was unsurprising that he punished some awful marking by Emmanuel Fernandez.

Ally McCoist in disbelief at Emmanuel Fernandez vs Ferencvaros

Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United in the summer, had a night to forget in Hungary.

Ally McCoist slammed Fernandez for his defending, as the Gers were fortunate not to concede early on, and that pattern continued throughout the game.

When Varga headed home Callum O’Dowda’s cross in the 72nd minute, the former Posh defender left McCoist in disbelief after he was turned the wrong way.

“Oh my goodness, he is actually facing the wrong way,” the Rangers legend said on TNT Sports. “I have no idea what to say, it’s unbelievable.”

It was an amateurish piece of defending from the 24-year-old and it sums up how poor the Gers have been in this competition.

Rohl’s men lack any sort of organisation and leadership. The German needs someone to take responsibility, but that is currently missing from the squad and that explains their struggles.

Fernandez had night to forget vs Ferencvaros

Calamitous defending has become a common theme for Rangers in the Europa League, seeing their lack of concentration and positioning get punished.

4/9 aerial duels won

Fernandez embodied how poor the visitors were against Ferencvaros, as he constantly looked shaky in possession and cost his side with the hosts’ second goal.

It’s been a poor campaign on the whole from the Englishman, whose performances have been plagued by inconsistency, much like the rest of his teammates.

Sadly, defeat against Ferencvaros has ended any chance of Rangers going into the play-off round, as they’re six points behind 24th place.
