Danny Rohl can’t afford to break unwanted 39-year European record in Rangers vs Ferencvaros

Rangers need to win against Ferencvaros on Thursday to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

The Bears have gained just one point from their opening five games and sit 33rd in the table, and a loss to Ferencvaros would confirm their elimination.

Rohl’s first game in charge of Rangers ended in a dismal 3-0 loss to Brann, and while his side has slowly started to improve, his next away match on the continent is an even bigger test.

The Hungarian champions are unbeaten in their first five matches, and they’ll be licking their lips at the prospect of taking on Rohl’s side.

Rangers’ Europa League campaign has been nothing short of a disaster, and a loss in Budapest would see them fall to five consecutive European away defeats for the first time in nearly 40 years.

Ferencvaros are the favourites to beat Rangers, and a loss for the Bears would see them break such an unfavourable, longstanding record.

Rangers have lost their last four away matches in all European competitions, conceding 13 goals in that time.

They’ve not lost five in a row since between November 1983 and October 1986, and all the signs are unfortunately pointing towards a loss for the Glaswegian outfit.

Despite Rangers’ 3-0 win over Kilmarnock on Saturday, there is no evidence to suggest that the squad is capable of registering a convincing performance against a team of a much higher calibre.

Ferencvaros have also won five of their last six home Europa League matches, as many as they had in their previous 23 home major European matches beforehand.

The signs aren’t promising for the Light Blues, although there are certainly a few players who look ready to step up on the European stage.

Which Rangers players will play a key role vs Ferencvaros?

Nico Raskin and Connor Barron are forming a special partnership in midfield, and they’ll need to control the game in what will be a hostile environment at the Groupama Arena.

Bojan Miovski’s excellent brace against Kilmarnock has him primed for a first Europa League start of the campaign in place of Youssef Chermiti.

Djeidi Gassama has been a bright spark throughout the campaign, and he could pose a real problem to a Ferencvaros defence that has only kept one clean sheet in their five matches.

Of course, the odds are firmly stacked against Rohl, but with so much on the line, a shock could certainly be on the cards if Rangers can make their chances count when they present themselves.
