Rangers warned they risk ruining players if parting Kevin Thelwell advice is followed

Derek Ferguson has warned Rangers they risk ruining younger players if Kevin Thelwell’s advice is followed.

Thelwell was sacked by Rangers last month, despite only officially beginning his role as sporting director in the summer.

Poor recruitment was to blame for Thelwell‘s axing, while chief executive Patrick Stewart was also sacked by Rangers.

It was a seismic double sacking from the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh, with more Ibrox departures also possible.

Danny Rohl asked to integrate youngsters into Rangers side

While Thelwell was constantly under pressure, the timing of the decision to part company with the former Everton figure came as a surprise.

Thelwell had only just given an in-depth interview to Rangers TV, during which he discussed the importance of youngsters being integrated into the side.

Rangers fans love nothing more than seeing ‘one of their own’ burst onto the scene, but player-turned-pundit Ferguson does not believe now is the right time to do so.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “He just needs to win games over anything else. Look at the past few games, with the atmosphere at Ibrox toxic with Rangers not getting going.

That can set young players back. They need to be introduced into a team that is going efficiently about their business.

The other side is whether these young players are actually good enough? They can’t just be put in for the sake of it.

There’s maybe one or two that might be good enough, but it’s just not the right environment for them at this moment in time. That needs to wait for further down the line.”

Findlay Curtis the next Rangers talent off the conveyor belt

Curtis has struggled for minutes this season, but an injury to Nedim Bajrami may given him his big chance.

The academy product has scored three times in 13 appearances this season, just two of those being starts.

Curtis’ record for Rangers in all competitions this season

Curtis has the perfect chance to stake a claim at Rangers over the coming weeks and become a real fan favourite.

Beyond the 19-year-old, though, other emerging talents are few and far between. As Ferguson says, you can only throw in youngsters if they are good enough to shine.
