Rangers receive massive boost in title bid after what Ally McCoist says about Wilfried Nancy

Rangers were the real winners as Hearts beat Celtic in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.

With Danny Rohl’s team getting the three points against Kilmarnock, fans in G51 must’ve been delighted to see their Old Firm rivals lose at Parkhead on 7 December.

The Ibrox faithful still have hopes of winning the William Hill Premiership this season, and the turmoil at Celtic certainly makes their job easier.

The Hoops would’ve gone three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand over Hearts had they won against Derek McInnes’ team, but it’s the Jamtarts that still hold the initiative, which will surely be a sign of relief in Govan.

Wilfried Nancy gamble puts Rangers back in title race

Martin O’Neill was starting to bring stability back to Celtic after being appointed interim manager, and it looked like they were on course to take advantage of Hearts’ recent slip-ups.

With Nancy now in the dugout, it will undoubtedly take the former Columbus Crew boss time to implement his ideas and tactics, which will likely lead to more dropped points and leave the door open for a title charge at Ibrox.

The Gers will be within six points of the league leaders if they win their game in hand, and the surprising appointment of the French manager at Parkhead could potentially hinder their hopes of winning five in a row.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 8 December, Ally McCoist said: “I think so [hiring Nancy is an almighty punt]. I really, really do. And I’m not saying it after the event, after yesterday, because you can take that game as a one-off. Hearts, as we’ve seen, they’ve beaten Celtic twice in a row, and they’ve won at Rangers, so the result isn’t a massive surprise, not a massive shock.”

The Scotsman added: “But the fact of the matter is, I think the appointment certainly surprised me and a lot of folk. From where I’m sitting, I wouldn’t have seen any reason not to keep Martin in it till at least the end of the season.”

Rohl will hope Andrew Cavenagh backs him in the winter transfer window, which will definitely help him push Hearts all the way.

Ibrox faithful set for new year delight under Danny Rohl

Rohl has admitted the William Hill Premiership is still within reach at Ibrox, and the Gers could potentially turn their situation around as soon as January.

Rangers face Hearts in the league at Tynecastle Park on 21 December, and the Old Firm derby is scheduled for 3 January at Parkhead.

With wins over their title rivals, the Light Blues can significantly close the gap at the top of the table with a perfect record, and they may even be leading by the start of next year if the other two teams drop more points in the coming weeks.

The Bears are unbeaten in the William Hill Premiership under the German manager, and fans at Ibrox have every right to be hopeful.
