Rangers figure may be tempted to quit after Kevin Thelwell sacking
Derek Ferguson has mooted the possibility of a Rangers figure calling it quits after the recent sacking of Kevin Thelwell.
Sporting director Thelwell was sacked by Rangers last month along with chief executive Patrick Stewart after a dreadful start to the campaign.
Thelwell only officially joined in the summer after his time at Everton came to an end, but he oversaw what many deem a wasted transfer window in the summer.
Despite funds being freed up by the new owners, Rangers wasted a large sum on flop forward Youssef Chermiti, whose Ibrox career has yet to get going at all.
Further Ibrox sackings have been demanded, but it may well be that one figure jumps ship on his own accord due to Thelwell’s sacking at Ibrox.
Robbie Thelwell may consider his own Rangers position
Kevin Thelwell controversially appointed son Robbie Thelwell as head of first-team recruitment not too long ago.
It led to obvious shouts of nepotism, with many wanting Robbie to be replaced by someone else before the next transfer window.
However, in the view of former Rangers player Ferguson, Thelwell senior should be judged independently from his father.
But that said, Robbie may be questioning if it is worth staying on as working alongside his dad may have been what tempted him to the club in the first place.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “If he’s up to scratch then it’s about if he can then do the job.
“I know plenty of eyebrows have been raised regarding Thelwell bringing his son in, but he has an opportunity to prove himself.
“If he proves he’s capable then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t keep his job. But for most fans out there on the outside looking in, it does look like jobs for the boys – or jobs for the family.
“That’s why it doesn’t sit well with fans, but he deserves an opportunity. It may well be that it comes down to the boy himself, because working with his dad may have been the lure.
“We don’t know the circumstances behind it, but if he can cut it, he can stay; if he’s not capable, the 49ers have showed they are willing to rectify mistakes.
“The majority of fans weren’t having Kevin Thelwell, so it’s no wonder they’re not happy with this.”
This is how Robbie Thelwell can win over entire Rangers fanbase
The role held by Thelwell means he’s not front and centre for most of the season, but that all changes when transfer windows approach.
Figures who oversee transfer matters are judged on one thing alone: the quality of players signed.
| Players | Transfer fee |
| Youssef Chermiti | £8m |
| Oliver Antman | £3.5m |
| Thelo Aasgaard | £3.5m |
| Bojan Miovski | £2.6m |
| Emmanuel Fernandez | £2.5m |
Rangers have wasted too many transfer windows of late and January has to be different.
Indeed, with a gap of six points on Hearts and Celtic – who play later on Sunday – this title race is not over just yet.
Get one or two real quality signings early in the New Year, and who knows what could happen.
