Kieran Dowell set for Rangers exit as January loan latest revealed

Kieran Dowell could be set for another temporary move away from Rangers.

Dowell spent last season at Birmingham City and had a mixed campaign as the Blues were promoted to the English Championship.

The Englishman has hardly featured for the Light Blues this season, with Dowell struggling earlier in the season against Viktoria Plzen.

There have been long-standing expectations that Dowell will leave Rangers in 2026, with the January window now looming in Govan.

It now looks as if Dowell will be on his way out of Ibrox, with another loan exit in the pipeline ahead of the winter market.

Hull City want Kieran Dowell on loan in January

There was an expectation that Danny Rohl could call on Dowell at Rangers, with new managers typically handing chances out to fringe players.

That hasn’t happened, and the 28-year-old has been going without a single minute for the Gers since he completed a full 90 against Alloa Athletic in August.

A January exit won’t come as a surprise to anyone, although the news of a likely loan departure may be met with frustration in G51.

Alan Nixon has reported to his Patreon that Hull City want Dowell on loan this winter, with the midfielder open to a Championship move.

The Tigers are currently under a two-window transfer fee restriction from the EFL, but are still able to sign players on loan, subject to league approval.

They are optimistic that they can agree terms with the Light Blues, even if they already have four loanees despite only being able to use five per match.

Rangers should seek permanent Dowell exit

It feels silly for Rohl and Co. to let the midfielder go in January on loan if there is no intention of ever utilising him.

Dowell hasn’t returned to the squad under the German, so there is unlikely to ever be a time where he is suddenly recalled.

A return to England could make total sense for the ex-Sheffield United man, but on loan doesn’t really suit Rangers’ needs.

The Light Blues need to free up squad space and funds for their own ambitions, so bringing in a fee for Dowell makes more sense than handing Hull a loan signing for little self-benefit.
