Rangers identify LaLiga expert to replace Kevin Thelwell at Ibrox, situation in Spain revealed

Real Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo has emerged as a contender to replace Kevin Thelwell at Rangers.

Thelwell and Patrick Stewart were recently sacked at Ibrox, leaving the Gers with vacancies in their leadership group.

The Light Blues have now made contact to know whether they can get the 40-year-old from the LaLiga club.

With Danny Rohl hoping for a better winter transfer window at Ibrox, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises can’t make a mistake in appointing Thelwell’s successor in G51.

Manu Fajardo happy at Real Betis amid Rangers links

Matteo Moretto has revealed that the Gers have enquired about the possibility of signing Fajardo from Betis.

It’s been claimed that clubs in Italy are also keeping an eye on the Spanish outfit’s sporting director, who has stood out after what he’s done at the Estadio Benito Villamarin.

While the Light Blues are interested in bringing the Spaniard to Ibrox, he’s currently satisfied with his position at the LaLiga club.

Speaking via Radio Marca on 5 December, Moretto said: “The Betis sporting director is standing out in the market… and is starting to attract suitors. Rangers have inquired about the possibility of signing him.”

The reliable journalist added: “There are also inquiries from clubs in Italy. We’ll see what the future holds; I know the Betis sporting director is very happy there.”

Thelwell has left Rohl’s squad in a mess, and it will undoubtedly take someone with exceptional talent to build a competitive squad at the Glaswegian outfit.

Manu Fjardo signings at Real Betis: What can he bring to Ibrox?

There’s strong consensus among Gers supporters that Thelwell depleted the quality of the squad at Ibrox compared to last season, despite a £20million net spend.

Rangers fans will now hope the rebuild promised to them after the American takeover will finally commence in January.

Fjardo has signed the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Antony and Natan since taking over as Betis’ sporting director in 2024, with the Spanish outfit finishing sixth in LaLiga last season.

The Los Verdiblancos’ recent success in the transfer windows may be an indication of what the Spanish chief may be able to bring to Govan.
