‘Catastrophic’ Kevin Thelwell Rangers signing poster boy of summer downgrade at Ibrox

Youssef Chermiti has been a “hopeless” signing for Rangers, Keith Jackson says.

The Gers signed the 21-year-old for £8million from Everton in the previous transfer window as they looked to replace Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane.

Chermiti just hasn’t lived up to expectations at Ibrox, and one of the gripes against Kevin Thelwell among fans in G51 was his willingness to spend a hefty sum on the Portugal Under-21 international.

Danny Rohl has also been let down by Bojan Miovski, leaving the Glaswegian outfit struggling to score goals this season.

Youssef Chermiti admission hard to digest at Rangers

Jackson hates to admit that Chermiti is the face of the “catastrophic” transfer window the Gers had under Thelwell.

The new additions up front had big shoes to fill at Ibrox after Dessers and Igamane showcased their prolificity in the previous campaign, and the two new strikers have arguably failed to make a case for themselves.

Vaclav Cerny was another key attacker for the Light Blues last season, and the downgrade in G51 is evident for everyone to see.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 4 December, Jackson said: “I think it’s a catastrophic error of judgment. And there have been games where he’s put himself about physically for a bit, but then sort of fades away. There’s nothing about this guy.”

The journalist added: “On no basis could I have been convinced that this was the player, especially when you’re letting Dessers, Cerny and Igamane out the door.

“When we talk about a summer of downgrades, that’s exactly… he’s the poster boy for it, Chermiti. I hate to say it, but he’s hopeless.”

Ibrox hierarchy must snatch offer amid Youssef Chermiti interest

Ibrox News understands Braga are interested in Chermiti, and it would be wise for the Gers to cash in on him.

Rangers should prioritise a new striker for Rohl in January, and if that means selling one of the number nines, then so be it.

It will undoubtedly take a long time to fix the errors Thelwell made at the Light Blues during his time as sporting director, and the upcoming transfer windows give Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises a chance to give fans some hope under the new ownership.

While Chermiti is still young and can surely turn things around, considering the pressure in Govan, it may be better for him to move away sooner rather than later.
