Barry Ferguson Rangers return on cards as crazy Ibrox prospect emerges

Andy Halliday believes it would be crazy for Danny Rohl to be involved in the decision to replace Kevin Thelwell at Rangers.

The former Gers ace feels someone like the German manager who’s just come through the door in G51 can’t be tasked with having a say in the appointment of a new sporting director.

Patrick Stewart and Thelwell’s time at Ibrox recently came to an end, and it will be interesting to see who the Light Blues appoint to fill the vacancies.

While Andrew Cavenagh will be delighted with Rohl, it would be surprising to see him have a significant role in selecting the new boardroom appointments.

Rangers may be working on Barry Ferguson return

Halliday has also heard rumours that Barry Ferguson may return to the Gers in some capacity after Thelwell’s dismissal.

The former Scotland international took charge at Ibrox as interim head coach after Philippe Clement was sacked, but he subsequently left at the end of last season.

It looks like the Glaswegian outfit may now be looking to bring the club ambassador back to Govan in a major position.

Speaking on Open Goal on 2 December, Halliday said: “Was Ferguson not mentioned the other day as well? I think in some capacity, I don’t know what that was, but bringing him in.”

When it was suggested Rohl could potentially have a say in who will replace Thelwell, Halliday added: “It’d be crazy if a manager picked a sporting director who’s been in the door for five or six weeks.”

It doesn’t look like Robbie Thelwell’s position at Ibrox is under threat despite his father’s exit, and the developments in G51 will be one to keep an eye on.

Who will replace Kevin Thelwell at Ibrox?

David Weir was being linked with a return to Ibrox after his successful stint as Brighton’s technical director, but he recently joined Strasbourg.

Rangers would now certainly be wise to wait and see who’s the best person available to be their new CEO and sporting director before making any decisions.

Stewart and Thelwell lasted less than a year at the Gers, and the American ownership must now put in place a support system that will help Rohl succeed in Govan.

While Ferguson doesn’t have boardroom experience, he undoubtedly has the aura and authority to play some role.
