49ers slammed for summer decision that ‘continues to baffle’ at Rangers
Rangers’ hierarchy made several additions in the summer transfer window, and one of them was not to bring Vaclav Cerny in on a permanent deal.
The Czech winger impressed on loan at Ibrox last season, notching 18 goals and nine assists in 52 matches for the Gers.
However, Rangers chose not to pursue a deal for Cerny, and went with alternative targets, with the new majority ownership, the 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, ultimately spending around £20million in the market.
The 28-year-old ultimately moved to Besiktas from Wolfsburg, in a deal worth approximately £6.1m, and is thriving in Turkey.

Rangers hierachy got it wrong with Vaclav Cerny call
Cerny was one of the bright sparks in a dismal Rangers season last time out, and the fact that he was available but was not signed, looks like a huge own goal.
Alasdair Lamont still cannot believe the decision, with the right-wing still being an issue for the Gers even after their huge recruitment drive.
Writing for the BBC on 3 December, he said: “The right wing continues to be an area where Rangers struggle.
“The decision not to bring in Vaclav Cerny on a permanent deal, given the other recruitment done in the summer, continues to baffle me.”
How does Cerny compare to Rangers’ current options
Cerny has notched one goal and five assists in 10 Super Lig matches, and those figures would be very useful to Danny Rohl at the moment.
Oliver Antman was signed for the right-flank, but he has only notched three assists in 20 games, and is currently out for around two months with a leg issue.
Mikey Moore has also featured on that side, with just one goal and one assist in nine matches since he joined the Light Blues on loan from Tottenham.
Djeidi Gassama has six goals and two assists in 26 matches since joining the Govan outfit, but none of those have come from his four appearances on the right.
Cerny was a consistent presence on that wing, and it is safe to say that the Gers are missing the loan star’s impact this season.
Lamont is correct, the decision is still baffling, especially when the transfer fee is taken into consideration.
It seemed like an obvious addition to make, but the ownership went in a different direction.
