Tom English reacts as Rangers immediately told to have signings in place for 1 January
Rangers have been told they are suffering the consequences of the worst transfer window in their history, despite the millions that were spent.
On Sunday, Rangers were held to a 0-0 draw against Falkirk at Ibrox, which halted Danny Rohl’s perfect start to life in the Scottish Premiership.
Doubts over Rohl have started to emerge following the result, and the 49ers will be biting their nails with potentially the most important month in the Bears’ recent history coming up.
Rangers want to improve their squad in January, but an explanation of one “reality” may be even worse than Andrew Cavenagh and Co. could have imagined.

Jonny McFarlane warns Rangers need to be ready for 1 January
Rangers sacked Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell recently, following an underwhelming summer transfer window, and Rohl has been left to pick up the pieces.
The Gers spent big, but supporters have been enraged by the performances of multiple additions that have yet to make a mark at Ibrox.
- Youssef Chermiti cost Rangers £10m, and has scored just one goal
- The Gers let Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers go in the summer
- Rangers made a net spend of £20m
After Rangers’ draw against Falkirk, Scottish journalist Jonny McFarlane took to X to express his thoughts on why multiple signings should be in place as soon as the winter transfer market opens at Ibrox.
McFarlane said: “Rangers are paying for the worst single transfer window in their history.
“You’d expect the owners to have woken up to the reality that £20m net has been wasted on a ‘maybe top six’ side.
“Several signings have to be in place for the 1st of January.”
Tom English immediately replied to McFarlane’s comments with a witty remark about one appointment that might even top the importance of Rangers’ transfers.
Tom English says Rangers ‘biggest challenge’ is replacing Kevin Thelwell
Rangers have started the process of looking at replacements for Thelwell and Stewart, with Cavenagh keen to bring in senior staff whose vision aligns with the Americans’ ambition.
English thinks that replacing Thelwell should be on their list of priorities ahead of any transfers.
Replying on X, the BBC journalist said: “Their biggest challenge is not falling for yet another fast-talking spoofer as sporting director.”
Thelwell was largely at fault for the failings of Rangers’ summer transfer window, and whoever comes in has a massive job of weeding out his poor signings.
January could be the month of difference for the Gers, but the 49ers and Cavenagh need to make every decision count.
