‘This is why Andrew Cavenagh is talking total mince about Rangers new signings’

Andrew Cavenagh has been slammed for his verdict on Rangers’ summer transfer business after sacking Kevin Thelwell.

Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin at Ibrox to turn the Gers’ season around. For the most part, he has started well.

Rangers’ most recent win over Livingston in the Scottish Premiership made it four games unbeaten for Rohl.

Whereas Rangers’ 1-1 draw against Braga in the UEFA Europa League highlights that there’s still work to be done.

The Gers’ new signings were brought in to help bolster their silverware hopes, but there’s an argument to be made that most haven’t been all that impactful.

Gary Keown is not convinced by Rangers’ summer recruits

Rangers saw 14 players arrive at Ibrox either permanently or on loan over the summer.

Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore was criticised for his start to the season, but has since settled in well.

Whereas, Youssef Chermiti’s exit is already on the cards despite arriving from Everton mere months ago for £8million.

Chairman Cavenagh recently stated that he is certain the Gers’ new signings will live up to their potential. However, the Scottish Mail on Sunday journalist Gary Keown is unconvinced

“Total mince, of course. This Rangers squad is miles off it, and that has surely been reflected in the assessments Rohl passed to the board recently,” he wrote via the print version of the Scottish Mail on Sunday (page 96, November 30).

“Maybe Cavenagh is just being politic. Many of these players are going to have to be shipped back out the door sooner rather than later, and telling the truth about how bad they’ve been is hardly going to spark an auction for their services.”

Rangers catching up to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership was laughable at one point. But Rohl has made Rangers fans believe.

However, if what Keown wrote rings true, the Gers will have a tough time producing anything worthwhile this season.

Four months into the season is too early to pass judgment

Chermiti is objectively Rangers’ most criticised summer signing, and his reported £8million price tag surely hasn’t helped matters.

It is undeniable that his stats are unworthy of his transfer fee:

But it’s difficult to make the case that the forward has been given ample opportunities to prove himself at Ibrox.

The same goes for most of the Gers new recruits who are still adapting to a new coach, teammates and for the most part, a new league.

Given the turbulent conditions they arrived to, it is no wonder that many are yet to show their potential for the Gers.

Four months into the season is far too early to make such a damning conclusion.

Indeed, it could be that case that several of these players won’t reveal their true form until a year into their stay at Ibrox.

There is no doubt that Rangers need reinforcements, but there is every chance that their new signings improve throughout the season.
