Ferguson urges 49ers to go all out for ‘absolutely brilliant’ figure who’d revolutionise Rangers

Derek Ferguson believes he knows the perfect person to replace Kevin Thelwell as Rangers’ next sporting director.

Thelwell was sacked by Rangers earlier this week after less than six months in the position, along with chief executive Patrick Stewart.

Stewart struggled for authority at Ibrox, while a number of decisions made by Thelwell have been called into question.

Indeed, there have been suggestions that Thelwell’s son Robbie could be next out the door at Ibrox.

The exits of Thelwell and Stewart leave two positions to be filled, with Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers chief Paraag Marathe likely to personally oversee the search.

Rangers told David Weir would be perfect sporting director

Ferguson expects the 49ers to learn from the latest fiasco at Ibrox, having already got rid of one manager and now two key members of staff.

And the ex-Rangers player believes that one of his former Falkirk teammates, David Weir, would be ideally suited to replace Thelwell.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “There’s the one name that jumps out and that’s David Weir.

He’s not long landed a new job in France, but sometimes the lure of working at Rangers can sway people. David’s someone who knows Rangers inside out and he’s a very clever guy.

He’d be absolutely brilliant at Rangers. Just look at the job he did at Brighton – it was second to none. It really is a no-brainer.

“But I’m just not sure about his circumstances right now. The 49ers really should go all out to get someone of his quality through the door.”

As Ferguson mentioned, Weir was only recently hired by Ligue 1 side Strasbourg as their sporting director, but that was prior to this Rangers position becoming available.

Weir worked wonders at Brighton – and would do likewise at Ibrox

Weir was rightly hailed for his work behind the scenes at Brighton and Hove Albion between April 2019 and October this year.

The Scotsman was briefly out of work before landing this new position, but the timing just did not work out for Rangers.

Had Thelwell been sacked a few weeks earlier, it would have made perfect sense to go all out for Weir as his replacement.

Weir would have transformed Rangers’ transfer network, as he did at Brighton, but it was not to be.

The 55-year-old will not be at Strasbourg forever, though, and a return to Ibrox one day seems a natural step.
