Danny Rohl gives up on Kevin Thelwell signing as multi-million replacement lined up
It wouldn’t be a shock to see Danny Rohl slowly getting rid of any Kevin Thelwell-inspired signings from his Rangers squad.
In just a few months at Ibrox, Thelwell managed to oversee two shambolic managerial hiring processes, brought in his own son and wasted millions on a bunch of players who’d look out of place in the Scottish Championship, let alone the Premiership.
Although Rohl initially walked away from talks to become the new Rangers manager after Russell Martin was sacked, the German seems to have steadied the ship and overseen some promising results in the league to help the Gers get their season back on track.
But, my word, it didn’t half take some toing and froing to get him up the marble staircase at Ibox.
Thelwell has now been sacked by Rangers – and rightly so – but his signings will still be in Rohl‘s matchday squad until at least January.

Danny Rohl in hunt to sign Berkay Yilmaz
And that is potentially why Rangers are looking at signing Freiburg’s left-back Berkay Yilmaz.
The 20-year-old Turkiye youth international is currently on loan to Nurnberg in the 2. Bundesliga, but could be recalled by Freiburg in January so that he can be sold permanently to an interested club like Rangers.
According to German newspaper BILD on 27 November, Bundesliga side Freiburg would have to pay a £260,000 termination fee to end his stay at Nurnberg, but they then want a £4.3million fee to sell him.

Any interest in left-backs is going to draw attention to Jayden Meghoma‘s future at Ibrox, especially because the Brentford loanee has struggled to adapt to life in Scotland so far.
Jayden Meghoma’s future is under threat
Martin and Thelwell signed Meghoma on a straight season-long loan in August as Jefte left Ibrox to join Palmeiras.
However, Meghoma’s form at Rangers has been worrying, both domestically and in the Europa League, where the Gers have lost all four games the Englishman has started.
In fact, their only European points this term have come in the only Europa League game the 20-year-old didn’t start, against Braga on Thursday.
| Opponent | Competition | Date | Result |
| Club Brugge | Champions League | 27/8 | 6-0 (L) |
| Genk | Europa League | 25/9 | 1-0 (L) |
| Brann | Europa League | 23/10 | 3-0 (L) |
| Celtic | Scottish Premiership | 31/8 | 0-0 (D) |
| Dundee United | Scottish Premiership | 18/10 | 2-2 (D) |
| Kilmarnock | Scottish Premiership | 26/10 | 3-1 (W) |
| Dundee | Scottish Premiership | 9/11 | 3-0 (W) |
| Hibernian | Premier Sports Cup | 20/9 | 2-0 (W) |
| Celtic | Premier Sports Cup | 2/11 | 3-1 AET (L) |
It remains to be seen whether or not Rangers can terminate Meghoma’s loan deal in January.
If they do, it could mean a potential financial penalty that would see them have to pay a fee to Brentford. However, it would also get him off their wage bill and open up room for Rohl to find a replacement, like Yilmaz.
However, the Gers’ left-back depth is largely poor.
Meghoma is the only out-and-out player for that position but as shown by stats by Sofascore, he’s hardly had the best season.

Max Aarons can also play there, but he’s mainly a right-back, and so can Derek Cornelius and Dujon Sterling, but they’re both currently injured and are better served in other areas of the pitch.
It would make a lot of sense for Rangers to sign Yilmaz, if they can get a deal done, and then keep Meghoma simply to keep an option in that area.
Unless Rohl has properly given up on him and wants to send him back to Brentford.
