49ers given homework advice on next Rangers appointment after latest exits
Derek Ferguson has suggested that the 49ers will have had a big learning experience from the failings of Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart.
Thelwell and Stewart’s sacking came as a pleasant surprise to many, and the 49ers will understand that who they recruit next could make or break Rangers’ season.
Danny Rohl has shown that Rangers can be successful this season, but the German requires support both on and off the field.
With the January transfer window also approaching, Ferguson has highlighted the importance of Rangers’ next appointments.

Derek Ferguson says Rangers need to do ‘better’ with appointments
Rangers drew 1-1 with Braga at Ibrox on Thursday, with the Gers’ hopes of Europa League success all but gone now.
Lots of this season’s underperformance has stemmed back to Stewart and Thelwell, as protests have even taken place at Ibrox.
Andrew Cavenagh and Co. may have made the right call in sacking the pair, but he will be questioned for bringing them to the Bears in the first place.
- Rangers appointed Kevin Thelwell in April
- Patrick Stewart officially started his role in December last year
- Rangers have already had to pay Russell Martin compensation
While speaking on Open Goal, Ferguson shared how Rangers’ hiring mistakes are costing them financially and explained why more research is needed before making crucial appointments.
Ferguson said: “It’s a learning curve for them, and they’re learning the hard way because it’s cost them a few bob.
“What they need to do is dig a bit deeper, talk to people, and find out information. Do your homework, and do it a bit better.”
Occasionally, in situations like this, parties can sometimes reach an agreement on a mutual termination of a contract.
However, it’s estimated that Thelwell and Stewart will have had a financial payout for the early termination of their contracts.
David Weir could be a step in the right direction for Rangers
Cavenagh has been urged to appoint David Weir next, after previously being linked with a Rangers role, who would be a direct replacement for Thelwell at the very least.
He’s someone that Ferguson admires too, for the work that the 55-year-old has done with Brighton in the past.
However, one stumbling block is that Weir was recently appointed the sporting director of French outfit Strasbourg, and it’s uncertain whether the formerly linked man would jump so quickly.
Stranger things have happened in football, but one thing is for sure, and it’s that the 49ers need to make their next appointments count.
