Youssef Chermiti incorrectly punished after Rangers incident vs Braga – ‘He’s got that wrong’

Youssef Chermiti continues to be trusted by Danny Rohl despite his clear struggles at Rangers.

Rangers drew 1-1 against Braga in the Europa League on Thursday, despite the Portuguese side playing the majority of the second half with 10 men.

Rodrigo Zalazar was sent off for a clear headbutt on Nicolas Raskin, with Mohamed Diomande also given his marching orders late on for two yellows.

It was referee Allard Lindhout who stole some of the headlines in the middle, though, especially with his treatment of Chermiti.

Gustaf Lagerbielke returned to Scotland for this one, leaving Celtic recently, and was at the heart of several questionable calls.

The Swedish international was beaten by Chermiti in the first half, only to drag him down and then get given the free kick himself by Lindhout.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound coverage on the game, Andy Halliday was left scratching his head at the decision to punish the striker.

“In this instance, I think the referee has got that one wrong,” he said.

“Chermiti’s pace, he gets the wrong side of Lagerbielke, the ex-Celtic man drags him down.

“I’ve got to say, I’m really surprised that is a free-kick, Braga’s way.”

How has Youssef Chermiti performed this season?

Kevin Thelwell was recently sacked at Ibrox, with Chermiti’s transfer costing up to £10million, one of the likely reasons behind that.

Ironically, Braga have explored a January deal for Chermiti, but he looks likely to stay under Rohl.

The 21-year-old has made seven appearances in the Scottish Premiership, scoring one goal, with his average minutes currently sitting at 33 per game.

With only one assist, too, it has not been an incredible start.

It looked like the perfect chance for Chermiti to break his rotten form when Zalazar was sent off, but he hardly saw the ball and was taken off in the 89th minute instead.

With Falkirk next up at Ibrox, Rohl is desperate for a better performance.
