Ferguson lashes out at ‘disrespectful’ Thelwell as Rangers decline exposed after axing

Derek Ferguson cannot believe how far Rangers have slipped backwards after spending £26m in the summer.

On Monday, Rangers announced their decision to sack Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart, which has prompted a massive sigh of relief around Glasgow.

Andrew Cavenagh revealed he wanted to shake up behind the scenes after what many saw as a disastrous transfer window from Rangers, overseen largely by Thelwell.

It has been suggested that Cavenagh pulled the trigger on the pair due to fan anger, but Ferguson‘s claim highlights why Thelwell, in particular, may have shot himself in the foot.

Derek Ferguson says Rangers downfall is on Kevin Thelwell

Thelwell‘s “disrespectful” signings came under fire once again after the Bears’ 1-1 draw against Braga in the Europa League on Thursday.

Nasser Djiga was criticised for his performance, while the former sporting director’s £10m signing of Youssef Chermiti also drew attention.

Speaking on Open Goal, Ferguson opened up on his true thoughts about Thelwell and suggested that Rangers have taken a step backwards because of how he handled this summer transfer window.

Ferguson said: “Even the signings he’s brought into the club as well, what are you up to? Are you treating the club disrespectfully?

“The recruitment is clear to see, where we were even last season with the players, we’re now in a worse position, even with that money he’s had to spend.”

But with Thelwell now gone, a decision around his son seems to be dragging on.

Are Rangers keeping Robbie Thelwell on?

It could be safe to say that nobody from a Rangers perspective was sad to see Thelwell get sacked.

However, Robbie Thelwell is still at Rangers, after being brought to Ibrox by his now-sacked dad.

His role is head of first-team recruitment, and if he takes after his father, then Rangers could yet be haunted further by the Thelwell name.

Danny Rohl is improving the Gers bit by bit; however, he is going to need help in the upcoming transfer market.

Cavenagh will likely keep tabs on the 26-year-old’s performance through the January transfer window, but it would be no surprise to see the Rangers chief make another unexpected decision before then.
