Ally McCoist explains massive Rangers concern after Braga draw – ‘I hope I’m wrong’
Ally McCoist is concerned that Rangers can’t play any better after their 1-1 draw with Braga on Thursday.
The Gers were in desperate need of a victory after losing each of their first four games in the Europa League.
However, despite James Tavernier’s record-breaking goal for Rangers, it wasn’t enough to secure the win at Ibrox.
Numerous Rangers stars were poor against Braga, a team that the Gers usually get the better of.
Now, McCoist is worried that the performance was the best that the team is capable of.

Ally McCoist: I’m not sure Rangers are capable of much better
While some players put in a solid performance against Braga, it was the usual suspects that let the Ibrox faithful down.
Nasser Djiga put in another terrible display for Rangers, with the Wolves loanee misjudging a clearance which allowed Gabriel Martinez to equalise.
Youssef Chermiti was not much better at Ibrox, with the attacker once again failing to get on the scoresheet.
- Rangers picked up their first point in the Europa League on Thursday
- It ended a run of seven successive European defeats
- However, their chances of qualification into the knockouts look thinner
Now, McCoist told TNT Sports on 27 November that he fears that many players can’t take the Glaswegians to the next level.
He said: “My concern, and it’s a big concern, is I’m not sure the team is capable of a lot better than that.
“I really hope I’m wrong. I really hope I am.

“You can’t make mistakes like the goal they conceded. I’m not sure these players can take Rangers to the next level. There’s an awful lot of work to be done.”
What do Rangers need to do to qualify for the Europa League knockouts?
Thankfully, thanks to the point against Braga, Rangers are no longer bottom of the league stage, and have moved up to 33rd.
However, their task remains huge, with the Gers five points off the qualification spot, with Basel currently occupying 24th.
| Rangers’ remaining Europa League fixtures | Home/away | Date |
| Ferencvaros | Away | 11 December |
| Ludogorets Razgrad | Home | 22 January |
| Porto | Away | 29 January |
Last season, at least 10 points were needed to reach the top 24, alongside a superior goal difference.
Therefore, it is likely that the Gers will need to win their final three matches in the competition by a comfortable margin if they are to progress into the next round.
