Steven Gerrard’s next job update emerges after Rangers U-turn

Steven Gerrard turned down a return to Rangers after the sacking of Russell Martin.

Gerrard was linked with a return to Ibrox before the Light Blues then turned towards former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

Rohl has played a crucial role in Rangers’ return to form on the pitch, though there are several issues off the pitch that are still hindering their ability to progress.

However, Gerrard has been out of a job since leaving Al-Ettifaq earlier this year, with a new update emerging on his future in management.

England return unlikely for Steven Gerrard

After turning down a return to Rangers, Gerrard was also loosely linked with several roles in England.

Most notably, Middlesbrough were said to be interested in his services before the Championship outfit turned to Kim Hellberg instead.

Now, talkSPORT have reported that a return to England is unlikely for Gerrard anytime before April, with his tax situation likely a big reason behind that.

If the former Gers boss were to return to England permanently, he would have to repay up to 45 per cent of his earnings from his time in Saudi Arabia.

With that in mind, it seems the most likely outcome for Gerrard is for him to remain without a club until the Spring, before venturing back into management.

Why did Steven Gerrard turn down Rangers return?

Gerrard claimed family reasons were a bit part of his decision to turn down a return to Ibrox, stating that the timing wasn’t right.

However, it’s quite likely that the hierarchy at Rangers also played a big part.

Kevin Thelwell’s departure was announced over the weekend, but his failures at Ibrox will have almost certainly put Gerrard off.

The former Liverpool midfielder found a lot of success in Scottish football when he was at Rangers, and that would have been tarnished by poor recruitment had he returned.

Rohl is doing a fine job in Glasgow as things stand, but there is every chance Gerrard’s name will appear again in the future if things start to turn south under the German.
