Michael Stewart reacts to what he saw Andrew Cavenagh say about bombshell Rangers sackings

Andrew Cavenagh faced up to the media following the sackings of Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart, with Rangers fans celebrating.

Thelwell and Stewart were dismissed by Rangers on Monday, and Cavenagh quickly spoke to Sky Sports about the decision.

Cavenagh came under pressure for sticking with Russell Martin for far too long, and he has finally made the long-awaited decision to get rid of his sporting director and chief executive officer in one go.

The Americans have gotten off to a terrible start with Bears supporters, and Michael Stewart believes that the chairman shouldn’t get off scot-free, despite initial praise.

Michael Stewart highlights concerns Rangers fans will have with Andrew Cavenagh

If Cavenagh and the other important figures in the Rangers hierarchy felt there would be a grace period after a summer of transition, then they weren’t prepared for the chaos that ensued.

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club podcast on 24 November, Stewart had mixed views on how Cavenagh conducted himself in the interview.

He said: “Listening to Cavenagh’s interview today, I thought he handled himself very well. He was very professional in the way he approached it. You can tell there was no messing about.

“He’s held his hands up and admitted they’ve made a mess of it in the first six months. Getting rid of the head coach, the director of football, and the CEO does raise questions about his own decision-making.

“Thelwell and Martin were his appointments, and there are now doubts over his ability as the chairman too.”

Martin’s reign at Rangers was abysmal, and the recruitment over the summer transfer window has highlighted a huge waste of funds.

Cavenagh took over as the chairman in May, and he will now be judged on who he brings in to replace Thelwell and Stewart.

Danny Rohl’s appointment has gone done well with Rangers fans, and Cavenagh is slowly starting to understand the needs of the supporters.

Supporters are completely justified in not placing full faith in their chairman, with the delayed dismissal of Martin sparking further unrest after each game that Rangers failed to win.

How can Andrew Cavenagh improve his reputation with the supporters?

The debacle at the start of the season is now in the past, and there is a clear desire to continue this season in the best way possible.

Not only do results need to improve on the pitch, but a proven strategy has to be implemented when it comes to recruitment.

Signing young players who are unproven in Scottish football has clearly cost Thelwell and Stewart their jobs, and whoever comes in next must not make the same mistake.

Cavenagh’s clarity in the interview will ease the thoughts of some fans, although he needs to ensure that every subsequent appointment is excellent in all areas.
