Simon Jordan immediately responds to Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell’s shock Rangers departure

Simon Jordan is not surprised that Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart have finally been dismissed by the Rangers board.

Both Thelwell’s role as sporting director and Stewart’s role as chief executive officer have been cut short after it was announced by the Light Blues on Monday that they have gone.

Thelwell and Stewart were targeted by fans during Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Roma, and their position on the board seemed to become more untenable by the minute.

Thelwell’s decision to appoint his son Robbie as Rangers’ head of recruitment went down terribly with Bears fans, as the club underwent a structural overhaul at the start of October..

The news has come as a shock to fans, who perhaps didn’t expect Andrew Cavenagh to act now, although Jordan saw it coming from a mile off.

Simon Jordan proved right by Rangers dismissals

Stewart was appointed as CEO in November 204, while Thelwell joined the Light Blues as the new sporting director in April 2025.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 24 November, Jordan reiterated his stance that he knew Thelwell and Stewart weren’t good enough to lead Rangers into the future.

He said: “I said it when they appointed Martin that they weren’t good enough, so it doesn’t surprise me.

“Ultimately, the Rangers board should have gotten their backsides in gear and made appointments themselves.

“The new ownership hasn’t hit the ground running, and first impressions always hit the ground running.”

Thelwell’s most expensive signings at Rangers

Thelwell’s relationship with Rangers fans is incredibly weak following his reckless spending on unproven players in the summer transfer window.

As for Stewart, the CEO also faced scrutiny for his role in the events that led to Russell Martin’s dismissal.

From the manager saga to the activity in the transfer window, there have been several factors that have contributed to Thelwell and Stewart’s demise, and ultimately, the Bears will be in a much better place in the future.

Thelwell’s interview with RangersTV over the international break might have been the final nail in the coffin, but it was the abysmal recruitment that cost him in the end.

Kevin Thelwell’s summer recruitment was critical to his tenure at Rangers

Thelwell gambled £10m on Youssef Chermiti despite the Portuguese striker not scoring a goal in senior football for over two years.

Oscar Cortes was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon despite being bought for £4.5m, while Emmanuel Fernandez was left out of match-day squads by Martin despite his £3.5m price tag.

To say the recruitment strategy has been a disaster is an understatement, with Djeidi Gassama and Jayden Meghoma proving themselves to be the pick of the bunch.

Both figureheads have addressed the concerns of supporters terribly and a new chapter now awaits for Rangers.
