Youssef Chermiti’s Rangers struggles typified by one frustrating reveal under Danny Rohl

Danny Rohl has certainly been given an unwanted headache by Youssef Chermiti’s recent performances for Rangers.

His only goal for the Bears came in the 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on 26 October, and it’s clear that he is suffering from the pressure it takes to lead the line for Rangers.

Chermiti joined Rangers for £10million from Everton on 1 September, with the move being pushed through by sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

Chermiti’s woeful displays against Celtic and Roma showcased how out of his depth he really is in Rangers colours, and speculation around his future is starting to gain momentum.

Youssef Chermiti makes most fouls per 90 among Scottish Premiership players

Despite being isolated at times, Chermiti must stop giving away as many fouls as he currently does, and he leads the way for that alarming stat in the Scottish Premiership.

Rohl arrived at Rangers with a huge job on his hands and was immediately tasked with lifting the morale around the dressing room.

The Portuguese striker has only won 39.2 per cent of his ground duels, and he needs to show more tenacity when up against aggressive defenders.

According to FotMob, Chermiti has made 3.9 fouls per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership, more than any other player in the division.

Thelwell’s expensive gamble hasn’t paid off yet, and the stats are highlighting a growing feeling that the 21-year-old might never be good enough to lead the line for the Bears.

Chermiti has only had 104 touches in his seven appearances, and it’s clear that he often plays on the periphery of games, but committing that many fouls is a huge advantage to other teams that want to slow matches down.

He still has the potential to be a success in Govan, as proven when getting himself into promising positions, yet he must improve drastically if he wants the fans to get off his back.

However, making a mistake that expensive is a sackable offence, and fans will continue to turn on Thelwell if Chermiti’s performances continue to worsen.

With Danilo starting to perform under Rohl, his game time is under threat, and the Europa League could represent his best chance of returning to form.

How long can Dany Rohl persist with Youssef Chermiti?

We’re over three months into the season, and the Christmas period will certainly provide an idea of how Rohl views Chermiti in the long-term future.

Russell Martin’s disastrous reign in charge saw many players underperform, but Rohl’s revival in charge has highlighted some who simply aren’t good enough, regardless of the manager at the helm.

Bojan Miovski’s struggles are taking some pressure off Chermiti, but he will always be judged by his price tag at Ibrox.

Whilst Chermiti isn’t in control of how much money the Bears spent on him, it’s up to him to prove his worth to Rohl, and he has clearly not done that on the numerous opportunities he has been given.

If he doesn’t improve swiftly, then his future at G51 will be under threat in the January transfer window.
