Rangers in talks to hijack rivals’ deal for rising star Galymzhan Kenzhebek as full details emerge

Rangers are already lining up new additions for the January transfer window as Kazakhstan winger Galymzhan Kenzhebek is the latest man to be linked with a move to Govan.

Rangers had a busy 2025-26 transfer window with 14 new players coming in, although most of the arrivals have failed to hit the ground running.

Apart from Djeidi Gassama and Jayden Meghoma, doubts have been cast over the quality of the summer signings, and the strategy of bringing in young players hasn’t been fruitful so far.

Rangers chief Kevin Thelwell has come under fire for his poor recruitment in the summer transfer window, but talks now appear to be underway to rectify that by potentially signing Kenzhebek.

Rangers in talks for Dundee United target Galymzhan Kenzhebek

Kenzhebek has broken through the ranks in Kazakhstan, and he has been in electric form at the start of the 2025-26 season.

Kazakhstan outlet ASnews has reported that Rangers have opened talks with FC Yelimay winger Kenzhebek over a potential move in January.

Scottish Premiership rivals Dundee United have already made an offer for the 22-year-old, and other European clubs are also interested in him.

An agreement is far from being reached, and teams from eight other countries are reportedly in for the exciting left-winger.

On 10 October, Kenzhebek announced himself to the Kazakhstan fans with two goals and an assist in the 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.

At 22 he doesn’t boast the greatest of goalscoring returns, but he is considered a rising star and the number of interested clubs says it all.

It’s imperative that Rangers start to make signings that aren’t just for the future, and they must not make the same mistake with Kenzhebek as they did with Oscar Cortes.

Rangers must not repeat Oscar Cortes mistake

Cortes spent two seasons on loan at Rangers between 2023 and 2025 before sealing a £4.5million move from Lens.

Cortes’ move has been criticised by Ally McCoist, as the 21-year-old winger has been sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon.

The decision to loan out Cortes highlights the ineptitude of the recruitment in G51, and there has to be a change in how players are identified as good signings when they clearly aren’t.

The transfer looks to be a huge waste of funds, and it’s up to Thelwell and co. to right their wrongs with the signing of Kenzhebek.
