Norwich City perfect job for Philippe Clement after Rangers impossibility

Norwich City manager Philippe Clement may have been set up to fail at Rangers, Jonny McFarlane says.

The Scottish journalist believes the Belgian manager wasn’t financially backed at the Gers, while being handed an “impossible situation” in G51.

Barry Ferguson replaced Clement at Ibrox in February, and since then, the new Norwich boss will feel he’s been vindicated at the Light Blues.

After an abysmal start to the season, Danny Rohl was appointed after Russell Martin’s sacking, highlighting the continuing turmoil at the Glaswegian outfit.

Clement or any other manager wouldn’t have been able to win the league title with the Gers, McFarlane says.

The journalist believes the Belgian head coach is now in a job at Norwich that suits his style of play.

Clement is tasked with bringing stability back to Carrow Road after Liam Manning’s departure, with the Canaries currently in the Sky Bet Championship’s relegation zone.

Speaking to The Pink Un on X on 18 November, McFarlane said: “Clement didn’t have a lot of money to play with. And I think there’s a sense amongst, if you talk to Rangers fans or journalists who covered the club, they would say that Clement was put in an impossible situation, an impossible job.”

The journalist added: “There’s no manager in the world who would’ve won the league with the situation that Rangers were in last year. I look at the Championship, I look at the style of football, and I look at the club Norwich and the size of the club, it’s a one-club town. I think it’s perfect for Clement.”

While the situation in G51 has been unstable in recent years, the Ibrox faithful won’t regret Clement’s departure, with many rightfully calling for his dismissal after some woeful performances against the likes of Queen’s Park in the Challenge Cup.

How Philippe Clement fared at Ibrox

Chris Sutton hopes Clement works out at Norwich after an underwhelming stint at the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers did win the Premier Sports Cup during the Belgian manager’s first season in charge, and there were certainly signs of progress under him after Michael Beale’s exit at Ibrox.

However, in the previous campaign, it felt like Clement had lost the dressing room, and despite some impressive results in Europe, the Light Blues’ domestic form was inconsistent, with Celtic taking charge of the league title race.

The Norwich boss’ record in the Old Firm derby wasn’t the greatest, with just one win in seven matches, and by the end of his tenure, his sacking was inevitable in G51.
