Jamie O’Hara slammed as Rangers and Celtic European Super League prospects emerge

Rangers and Celtic would want to take part in a potential European Super League in the coming years.

Former Gers midfielder Alex Rae believes the two Old Firm clubs will want to jump on to any sort of significant European competition for “self-preservation”.

Jamie O’Hara recently disrespected the William Hill Premiership by claiming Sky Bet League One team Stockport County would win it over the Glaswegian outfits.

With the current turmoil at Parkhead and Ibrox right now, Hearts have taken advantage and are hoping to break the duopoly in Scottish football, but the size and following of the two Old Firm rivals can’t be discounted.

Rangers and Celtic known worldwide

Rae argues that the likes of O’Hara may be ignorant of how big the Gers and Celtic truly are in world football.

While talk of a European Super League has subsided in recent years following fan backlash, it wouldn’t be surprising to see top teams from LaLiga, Serie A and the Premier League try to revive it.

Considering the stature and eyes on the two Old Firm clubs, there’s definitely a world in which they will be part of a European competition with all of the historic teams in it, and the finances may be too lucrative for them to ignore it.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on 17 November, Rae said: “I think it’s lost on people like Jamie in terms of the size of the club. They’re massive clubs with a worldwide following, and they’re in a league that both of them have dominated for generations.”

The Scotsman added: “There will be some sort of European Super League down the road, and I would imagine Rangers and Celtic would most certainly jump on the back of that because it all boils down to self-preservation. They’ll be looking to try and tag on to whatever level that is.”

It could also be argued that if the two Old Firm rivals were in the Premier League, the significant financial resources in England might help them become powerhouses down south.

Ibrox and Parkhead accomplishments ignored due to Premier League snobbery

Indeed, Danny Rohl’s team is arguably one of the worst at Ibrox, with Roma highlighting the lack of quality in G51 in their 2-0 Europa League victory on 6 November.

Rangers and Celtic are both going through a rough patch right now, but their history can’t be ignored.

In 2022, Giovanni van Bronckhorst led the Gers to the Europa League final, only losing to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties, while Brendan Rodgers gave Bayern Munich a run for their money in the Champions League play-off just last season.

While the Premier League has a host of talent, the two Old Firm rivals have been competing at the highest level on a significantly lower budget, and that can’t be ignored.
