Chris Sutton takes needless Rangers swipe after Philippe Clement appointment at Norwich City

Chris Sutton just could not help himself as he reacted to news of former Rangers boss Philippe Clement taking charge of Norwich City.

Clement was confirmed as manager of English Championship club Norwich on Tuesday in his first job since being sacked by Rangers in February.

The Belgian largely flopped as Rangers manager and was eventually replaced by Russell Martin in the summer after Barry Ferguson’s interim spell in charge, but his predecessor lasted just months.

Clement is taking over a Norwich side struggling at the wrong end of the division as they sit second from bottom with nine points from 15 matches.

Chris Sutton wishes ‘good luck’ to Philippe Clement at Norwich

It seems like a tough job Clement is taking on south of the border, with Sutton seemingly quick to point out the similarities with the Rangers job.

Clement will need all the luck he can get in what is his sixth permanent managerial position, which also includes spells with Waasland-Beveren, Genk, Club Brugge and Monaco prior to joining Rangers.

Taking to X shortly after the news was announced on Tuesday, former Norwich and Celtic striker Sutton said: “Good luck to the big Belgian Philippe Clement at Norwich City.

“Not an easy task taking over a team low on quality and confidence. Staying up this season the priority.”

Sutton is known to take regular swipes at Rangers on social media, and there is every chance he did so with this message – specifically the “low on quality” part.

How does Philippe Clement’s record compare to other recent Rangers managers?

Danny Rohl has started his Rangers tenure with three successive Scottish Premiership wins, offset by defeats to Celtic, Brann and Roma in cup competitions.

Rohl has won over the Rangers fanbase, unlike Martin, who departed with a truly abysmal record at Ibrox.

As per data provided by Sofascore, Martin departed earlier this season with a win rate of just below 30 per cent across 17 matches in all competitions.

That compares to a win rate of 64 per cent for Clement in 86 matches, as he collected 2.16 points per game in the Scottish Premiership.

That is by no means a terrible record, but nor was it at the standard Rangers expect.

Clement will now embark on a new era in his career in England, and Norwich supporters need to hope he performs better than he did in Glasgow.
