Kevin Thelwell called out again as latest Rangers conspiracy theory emerges – ‘Cheap, crass’

Kevin Thelwell’s latest interview has gone down incredibly badly with the Rangers supporters.

Rangers had a net spend of £20million in the summer transfer window, with Thelwell outlining that the squad has massively improved.

Thelwell’s decision to appoint his son Robbie as Rangers’ head of recruitment has gone down terribly with Bears fans, as the structural overhaul behind the scenes under Andrew Cavenagh continues.

Thelwell’s spell as sporting director at Rangers has begun in appalling fashion, making several mistakes in his short tenure, and Keith Jackson found his latest in-house interview has done nothing to help.

Kevin Thelwell’s reputation takes an even bigger hit

With the majority of the summer signings failing to impress, the atmosphere at Ibrox has become toxic towards both Thelwell and Patrick Stewart.

In his interview with RangersTV over the international break, Thelwell continues to dodge and deflect questions over his own future, instead speaking about the ongoing fight with the Scottish FA.

Writing in the Daily Record on 17 November, Jackson was not buying anything that Thelwell spoke about in his interview, in which he was trying to get the fans back on side.

He wrote: “Thelwell seems to think he can win over fans by playing the victim card. It’s cheap, crass, and unlikely to work.

“Those running Rangers ought to be better than that and look in the mirror rather than search for conspiracy theories.”

Thelwell’s most expensive signings at Rangers

Not only has Thelwell made several serious mistakes, but he seems to be getting off scot-free.

Thelwell oversaw the worst transfer window in recent history, yet he wasn’t disciplined, and then he hired his son as the new head of recruitment.

The recruitment strategy has been a disaster, and only Djeidi Gassama and Jayden Meghoma have proven themselves to be somewhat smart acquisitions.

The Light Blues supporters will need to see Thelwell prove himself through his actions, and fans are praying that he can bring in top-quality players in January.

Oscar Cortes and Youssef Chermiti at the heart of Kevin Thelwell’s problems

Thelwell came under fire for signing Youssef Chermiti for £10million, while he has always been criticised for the decision to send Oscar Cortes out on loan.

Cortes was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon after signing permanently for £4.5m, and although that was agreed in June 2024, the decision to send him out lies with Thelwell.

The 51-year-old has been subjected to abuse and scrutiny by Bears fans who have clearly had enough, and it seems like it would take a miracle for him to regain the trust of the Ibrox faithful.

If the recruitment doesn’t improve, Cavenagh must do the right thing and relieve Thelwell of his duties as soon as possible.

The excuses have gone too far.
