Celtic set to appoint their very own Russell Martin after what Wilfried Nancy has said

Wilfried Nancy looks set to be the next man in charge of Celtic, with Rangers ready to welcome him with domination over their rivals.

After Brendan Rodgers resigned in shock circumstances, Nancy appears to be in advanced talks to leave Columbus Crew for Celtic and Parkhead.

Rangers have also faced managerial dismay this season, with Russell Martin appointed under new ownership only to be sacked and replaced by Danny Rohl before Christmas.

Martin did himself zero favours at Ibrox, and his nightmare spell is already facing comparisons.

Celtic set to appoint the next Russell Martin?

Gary Keown is not fully sold on Nancy at Parkhead, though, admitting that he is already appearing strikingly similar to the sacked Martin.

Writing in the print edition of the Scottish Mail on Sunday, the journalist shared just some of the catchphrases he has heard from the Frenchman.

“His catchphrases are already out there on the internet in their full glory,” Keown said.

“We play the same way that we live. ‘I want to create art’. ‘There is only one virtue in life: courage’.

“Take all that psychology at face value and it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that Celtic, in Wilfried Nancy, have committed the fatal error of targeting a French version of Russell Martin as their next head coach.”

What is the state of play in the Scottish Premiership?

Hearts are still currently out in front, but have faced a tougher few weeks.

Despite beating Celtic in that spell, draws against Dundee United and St Mirren have left the door slightly ajar for Rangers, too.

Rohl has picked up three consecutive wins with Rangers beating Dundee 3-0 before the final break of the year, leaving them 12 points behind Hearts but with a game in hand.

Rangers are also five points behind Celtic, but that could change rapidly.

Nancy looks set to take over during the international break, working with a depleted squad before tough away trips to St Mirren and Hibernian.

Should he fail in those, which is Celtic’s worst-case scenario, Rangers could overtake them and put themselves in the driving seat to catch Hearts.

With Livingston and Falkirk next up at Ibrox, six points are all that is needed for Rohl to put pressure on Nancy and everyone around Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
