Danny Rohl may have unorthodox solution after what Josh Gentles did away from Rangers
Josh Gentles may have handed Danny Rohl a solution to Rangers’ biggest problem this season.
Rangers brought in the likes of Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski to compete with Danilo for the number nine spot, but none of the trio have impressed.
The Gers do not score enough goals, but the 18-year-old may be the answer after his latest exploits on the international stage.
Gentles notched a goal in Wales Under-19s’ 3-2 win over Japan on 12 November, which will have surely put Rohl on notice.
Who is Rangers talent Josh Gentles?
Gentles is one of the most promising talents in Rangers’ academy, and he is capable of playing as a centre-forward or an attacking midfielder.
The Welsh youth international has scored twice in seven matches for the Gers’ B team, and notched three goals and three assists on loan with Alloa Athletic last season.
He joined Raith Rovers on loan in August and has made four appearances with no goals to his name yet for the Fife outfit.
At this rate, given the way his current options are playing, Rohl may decide to recall him and give him a chance to shine, if it is possible.
Rangers need to start utilising their academy
The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh have made a serious effort to overhaul the academy, with a key member of staff brought in to the Govan outfit.
Jonathan Hunter-Barrett has been hired to improve the pipeline to the first team, which has been desperately lacking at Auchenhowie in recent years.
Ross McCausland and Findlay Curtis are the most prominent names to break through in recent years, and the former is currently out on loan, while the latter is struggling for minutes in G51.
The Gers may call on Gentles as the solution to their problem, but they cannot treat him like Curtis if he is to develop properly.
He needs to be playing regularly, and if he is not going to get that at the senior level, he should be left to thrive on loan in the second tier.
However, Rohl may decide to take a gamble on him.
