This stat reveals why Danny Rohl must give Youssef Chermiti another chance at Ibrox

Youssef Chermiti has found himself regularly under the spotlight early in his career at Rangers.

Chermiti has already been linked with a departure from Rangers after several disappointing performances this season.

Neil McCann branded Chermiti as “lazy” for his performance in the 3-0 win against Dundee on Sunday in one of the latest controversies involving the forward.

Chermiti’s move from Everton is seen as one of the Gers’ worst signings of the summer, but that assessment may be a little premature.

The problem with Youssef Chermiti at Rangers

Chermiti has made seven appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season but has only contributed to two goals.

A closer examination indicates that the striker shouldn’t shoulder the blame alone despite his underwhelming output so far in Govan.

The forward has started just one game in the Premiership, averaging 33 minutes per match under both Danny Rohl and Russell Martin.

Having signed from Everton for a sizable fee, the 21-year-old isn’t scoring at the expected rate, but chances have been at a premium this campaign.

His team-mates aren’t finding him in ideal goalscoring positions, and that is having an understandably negative impact on his output.

That could change as Rohl continues to evolve his squad, so fans may want to withhold their critique until the number nine is awarded a consistent run of games.

And there is one notable element that means Chermiti should be given another chance by Rangers supporters.

Youssef Chermiti shows promise in the final third

Danny Rohl dropped Chermiti for Rangers against Dundee as the forward faced another blow in his early Ibrox career.

His goalscoring form seemingly played a key role in that decision, but he has managed to show quality in other areas.

For instance, Chermiti ranks among the top Scottish Premiership players for possession won in the final third this season.

Chermiti has won possession in the final third 1.60 times per 90 minutes on average, which is the second most in the top flight.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon man also averages 2.70 possession won in midfield per game, proving the effort he is putting in for the Light Blues.

Chermiti clearly wants to make an impact for his side, but the Bears faithful demand goals from their centre-forwards.

The summer signing appears to have the tools to become a complete player for Rangers if he and his team-mates can develop a better understanding on the pitch.

Rohl must grant him regular chances to show his quality at Ibrox, and the German could soon reap the rewards.

There is still a player within Chermiti, but it now remains to be seen whether the head coach has the patience to bring him out.
