Kevin Thelwell no longer trusted at Rangers as Andrew Cavenagh has major dilemma
Michael Stewart wonders whether Andrew Cavenagh will give Kevin Thelwell more funds to spend at Rangers in the winter transfer window.
The sporting director doesn’t seem to have many backers at the Gers after an underwhelming recruitment drive in Govan.
Thelwell’s biggest blunder has surely been Youssef Chermiti, with many fans in G51 baffled at the £8million spent on the striker who failed to score or assist in his two years at Everton.
Bojan Miovski has also struggled at Ibrox, with the Glaswegian outfit undoubtedly in need of reinforcements in January.

Rangers must invest in winter transfer window for Danny Rohl
Stewart is right to suggest that Thelwell isn’t a well-liked figure at the Gers, as fans have held demonstrations against him.
The former Scottish midfielder believes there aren’t many who trust the sporting director anymore after the Light Blues’ £20m net spend resulted in an arguably worse squad at Ibrox.
As a result, it will be interesting to see whether Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises will be willing to let the former Everton chief lead the charge of strengthening the squad in future transfer windows.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast on 10 November, Stewart said: “I think the big question in all of this is, do the owners trust him to make the signings in January and next summer and moving forward, because I would suggest I don’t think there are many others out with the club that do.”

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Danny Rohl demand new signings at Ibrox in January, with the current squad certainly lacking a lot of quality.
Roma dominated the Glaswegian outfit in their own backyard in the Europa League on 6 November, highlighting the issues in G51.
Kevin Thelwell going nowhere after what Andrew Cavenagh has done at Ibrox
Cavenagh seems to have blind faith in Thelwell, with the Gers continuing to fill their backroom with people who are associated with the sporting director.
Rangers have recently appointed Dan Purdy, Nathan Fisher, Robbie Thelwell and Jonathan Hunter-Barrett to important positions, highlighting the former Everton chief’s influence.
| Players | Transfer fee |
| Youssef Chermiti | £8million |
| Oliver Antman | £3.5m |
| Thelo Aasgaard | £3.5m |
| Bojan Miovski | £2.6m |
| Emmanuel Fernandez | £2.5m |
It doesn’t look like the Light Blues’ hierarchy have any plans of replacing Thelwell anytime soon.
The winter transfer window will be an important test for the US consortium to undo their recent errors, and whether the sporting director will have complete control of recruitment remains to be seen.
