Danny Rohl must find Rangers starting role for Thelo Aasgaard amid stunning Premiership stat

Danny Rohl has to find a starting spot for Thelo Aasgaard at Rangers despite his struggles so far.

The Norway international has struggled to adapt to life at Ibrox since his £3.5million move from Luton Town in the summer, and he has managed just six starts in league action so far this term.

Aasgaard was sent off for Rangers in their recent defeat to bitter rivals Celtic in the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup, in a moment that has arguably summed up his time in Govan so far.

Danny Rohl has introduced the attacker at half-time in each of the Gers’ two most recent games, but he surely has to find space for him from the off in future games after this reveal.

Thelo Aasgaard among Premiership’s best for successful dribbles

Aasgaard has come under fire at Rangers of late, with both fans and pundits growing frustrated at the lack of impact that he has had since his arrival.

He has managed just two goal contributions from his 18 appearances for the Gers in all competitions so far, and that tally suggests that he has been a far cry from the player that Kevin Thelwell and Co. thought they were getting in the summer.

However, all is not lost on the 23-year-old, as he clearly has an abundance of technical ability, and Rohl will surely be inclined to hand him more starting opportunities after the emergence of this shock stat.

Aasgaard’s tally of 2.77 successful dribbles per 90 minutes currently ranks him second in the entire Premiership, when compared to players who have made five appearances or more this term, as per Sofascore.

PlayerSuccessful Dribbles per 90Successful Dribbles %
1Ibrahim Said (Motherwell)3.0762.86%
2Thelo Aasgaard (Rangers)2.7768%
3Elijah Just (Motherwell)2.752.78%
4Jesper Karlsson (Aberdeen)2.4472%
5Dante Polvara (Aberdeen)2.4157.89%
Premiership’s most successful dribbles per 90 mins, as per Sofascore.

The former Wigan Athletic man has completed a stunning 68 per cent of his dribbles in league action in 2025-26, and that certainly highlights his ability to glide with the ball and draw opponents into challenges.

That ability to carry the ball could hold the key to further unlocking Rangers’ attack, as it would create valuable space for his teammates.

With that in mind, Rohl simply must try and find space for him in the XI moving forward.

Thelo Aasgaard to replace Danilo in Rangers starting XI

Mikey Moore has been superb for Rangers since Rohl’s arrival, and he looks like a totally different player to the one who appeared to be struggling badly for confidence during Russell Martin’s reign.

The Tottenham loanee is one of the first names on the team sheet at the moment, which means that if Aasgaard is to break into Rohl’s 3-4-3 system from the off, he will have to do so on the right flank.

That position was occupied by Danilo in the first half of the 3-0 win at Dundee on Sunday, and the fact that he was replaced by Aasgaard at half-time was perhaps an indication of what is to come from Rohl.

The Brazilian had been on a good run in front of goal a few weeks ago, but as has come to be expected by now, his form has quickly tailed off in recent games.

Aasgaard has already shown that he isn’t a natural fit as a central striker, and with Moore effectively undroppable at the moment, the only real opening for him will be on the right wing.
