Barry Ferguson shares fresh Rangers title hope after Derek McInnes disappointment

Rangers are still in the William Hill Premiership title race after beating Dundee on Sunday, Barry Ferguson says.

The Gers icon hasn’t ruled out the Light Blues’ chances of catching Hearts at the top of the league table as Danny Rohl secured three points at Dens Park on 9 November.

As things stand, the Glaswegian outfit are 12 points behind the Jambos but have a game in hand over them.

While Hearts have had a brilliant start under Derek McInnes, there’s still a long way to go in the season, with the Edinburgh outfit drawing two of their last three league matches.

Rangers and Celtic give Derek McInnes something to think about

Ferguson hasn’t ruled out the Gers or Celtic’s chances of winning the William Hill Premiership this season, despite Hearts’ significant points gap.

Russell Martin’s abysmal start at Ibrox has left the Light Blues facing an uphill battle after their worst league start since 1978.

As for the Hoops, they’ve had their own problems, with Brendan Rodgers eventually resigning, and the Jambos have taken advantage of the crisis at the Old Firm clubs.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 10 November, Ferguson said: “I think both Celtic and Rangers could catch Hearts. Derek will think different, I’m sure. He’ll be disappointed.”

Ferguson added: “I liked his interview. He was very honest. He said they didn’t deserve to win the game. Now, it’s the international break. I’m sure they’ll come back and try and win more games of football. But certainly, the league title is still there.”

While Rohl has certainly done well at Ibrox, talks of getting back into the title race may be a bit far-fetched at this stage.

Danny Rohl and Derek McInnes set for tense face-off

Rohl’s tactical nous has undone Martin’s stubbornness, with the former Southampton boss’s style of play detrimental in G51.

Rangers are now much more flexible, and the German manager is smart enough to make changes depending on the opposition, something the Scottish head coach wasn’t willing to do.

The Gers have some winnable league fixtures on paper against Livingston, Falkirk and Kilmarnock before facing Hearts at Tynecastle Park on 20 December.

As for McInnes, he’ll have to deal with the likes of Motherwell, Dundee United and Celtic before welcoming the Gers, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Edinburgh outfit drop several points in the coming weeks.
