Rangers nonsense called out live on air as Ally McCoist defends Danny Rohl

Rangers fans are wrong to think they have a chance of winning the William Hill Premiership under Danny Rohl this season, Jeff Stelling says.

While the talkSPORT host admits the German manager has been a reasonable hire at the Gers, the idea of competing for the league title in the current campaign doesn’t make sense.

Rohl’s team beat Dundee at Dens Park on 9 November, with the Light Blues recording three back-to-back wins in the William Hill Premiership after the 3-0 victory.

Hearts are seen as favourites to win the league under Derek McInnes, but the Jambos slipped up once again, dropping points after their 1-1 draw with Dundee United at home.

Ally McCoist impressed with Danny Rohl at Rangers

While talks of the Gers closing the 12-point gap may seem unrealistic, there’s no denying the job Rohl has done so far in G51.

Ally McCoist gave the former Sheffield Wednesday manager his flowers for turning things around at Ibrox after Russell Martin’s disastrous 123-day spell.

The German manager still has a long way to go at the Glaswegian outfit, as has been highlighted in the Europa League, but there certainly are positive signs.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 10 November, Stelling said: “[Rohl] talks sense, but people are talking about Rangers winning the title now, they don’t talk sense.”

McCoist responded: “He’s done well, though. He’s just completely turned the thing around.”

Rohl would arguably be wise not to focus on the Europa League, with the chances of qualifying for the knockout stage looking slim after the 2-0 home loss to Roma on 6 November.

Hearts and Celtic have left open for Danny Rohl miracle at Ibrox

It’s a shame Martin wasn’t able to take advantage of Celtic’s crisis, with the situation at Parkhead not the greatest as Brendan Rodgers decided to resign after an underwhelming start to the season.

Rangers could’ve pounced on their Old Firm rivals’ miseries, but instead, it has been Hearts who’ve taken the initiative.

The top four in the William Hill Premiership

The last time a team other than the Gers and Celtic won the league title was 40 years ago, and McInnes is now looking to break the duopoly in Scottish football.

However, the Jambos have drawn two of their last three matches in the William Hill Premiership, and the Hoops are yet to appoint a permanent manager, leaving Rohl with a slightly realistic opportunity to make a case for the Light Blues in the race for the title.
