Barry Ferguson completely ignored as Kevin Thelwell exposed at Rangers

Kevin Thelwell has arguably made Rangers worse than they were last season following his summer recruitment drive.

Many fans would argue the Gers had one of their worst squads in the previous campaign, but the new sporting director has somehow made it worse.

Thelwell backed Russell Martin in the previous transfer window, but none of the 13 players that the Light Blues brought to G51 have made a big enough impact.

Danny Rohl has now been hired at Ibrox, and the German manager must’ve surely been handed a reality check of just how poor his squad is after losing 2-0 to Roma in the Europa League on 6 November.

Barry Ferguson wanted leadership and mentality at Rangers

Barry Ferguson saw first-hand just how bad things were at the Gers after taking over as interim manager from Philippe Clement.

The former Scotland international highlighted the need for better characters at Ibrox during his time at the Light Blues, but his recommendation seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.

Andy Newport wrote in the Daily Record on 10 November: “Ferguson spelt out repeatedly during his stint as interim boss the need to find men of character as well as technical quality when recruiting players for Rangers.”

The Glaswegian outfit eventually decided to part ways with the ex-midfielder and went on to appoint Martin, who led them to their worst league start since 1978, recording a win rate of 29 per cent.

Five most expensive transfers at the Gers in the summer

Thelwell decided to focus on signing players from English football, with nine players arriving permanently or on loan from down south to G51 in the summer, with arguably all of them feeling the pressure in Scotland.

Newport added: “That was brutally exposed almost immediately, with the likes of Aarons openly admitting he’s never experienced anything like the pressure levels he’s faced at Ibrox.”

Andrew Cavenagh not planning Kevin Thelwell sack after what’s been seen at Ibrox

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises seem to be backing Thelwell despite fans wanting to see a change in the boardroom.

The sporting director and Patrick Stewart have now become enemy number one at Rangers, with supporters calling for their dismissal.

However, the recent appointments of Robbie Thelwell as the head of recruitment at Ibrox and new academy director Jon Hunter-Barrett, who worked with the former Everton chief at Wolves, may suggest he’s going nowhere.

The US consortium risk facing the heat at the Glaswegian outfit sooner rather than later if they fail to learn from their mistakes.
