Danny Rohl to regret critical Rangers blunder, it cost them dearly vs Roma

Danny Rohl made a notable blunder that ultimately cost Rangers in their 2-0 defeat to Roma on Thursday night.

The Gers succumbed to yet another defeat in the Europa League, and now sit bottom of the entire league phase, having failed to notch a single point from their opening four games.

Rangers fans protested against Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart during the game, as they made their feelings abundantly clear towards two key figures within the club’s hierarchy.

It was yet another frustrating European evening for the Gers, but Rohl could potentially have avoided all of that had he not made a crucial error in his team selection.

Danny Rohl is sure to regret not starting Derek Cornelius vs Roma

John Souttar was caught out in the Rangers backline for the visitors’ second goal, as he got on the wrong side of Artem Dovbyk from a long ball that was launched towards the box.

It was the standout moment from what was a horrific night for the Gers’ backline, as they simply didn’t look like they were at the level required to compete with a team of Roma’s standing.

The Italian side had a relatively easy night as things turned out, but it could have been so different had Rohl’s men not let themselves down defensively in the key moments of the game.

The hosts were also undone from a corner for Roma’s opener, in another moment that would have provided the boss with plenty of frustration.

With that in mind, the German will surely be regretting his decision not to start Derek Cornelius for the midweek clash.

The Canada international has been imperious in the air this term, winning 56 per cent of his aerial duels in Premiership action so far this season, and his performance levels have been excellent of late.

The Marseille loanee is one of the only members of the Rangers squad who has played at a similar level to that of Roma during his career, and as a result, his experience would surely have been invaluable.

Rangers can kiss goodbye to Europa League qualification

Rangers have had a woeful Europa League campaign so far, and any hope of qualifying for the next stage of the competition has surely now deserted them after their latest defeat.

The Gers are currently five points away from the play-off places at the halfway mark of the league phase, and they have some daunting fixtures still to come on the horizon.

Rangers’ four remaining Europa League fixtures.

They face a difficult test against high-flying Braga at Ibrox in their next continental outing, before an awkward visit to unbeaten Ferencvaros.

A home clash with Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets follows, before they end their campaign with the daunting proposition of a trip to face Porto.

Given their recent struggles, it is hard to see where the points are going to come from for the Govan outfit, with only the Ludogorets clash looking like a truly winnable game.

With that in mind, Rohl must surely place all his eggs in the Premiership basket and hope that he and his men can begin to reel in Hearts at the top of the table.
