Andrew Cavenagh to be baffled by Rangers mess as £70m claim emerges
Andrew Cavenagh may be wondering how Rangers find themselves in such a mess despite spending £35million in the summer.
Journalist Jonny McFarlane slammed the Gers after Roma cruised to a victory at Ibrox in the Europa League on 6 November, with goals from Matias Soule and Lorenzo Pellegrini.
Cavenagh must be regretting handing Kevin Thelwell authority over recruitment, with none of the 12 players he brought to the Light Blues adding quality to the team.
If anything, the Glaswegian outfit have gotten worse since last season, something many fans wouldn’t have imagined after the American takeover in G51.

Rangers need further investment in upcoming transfer windows
McFarlane believes the Gers may need to spend similar amounts to what they spent in the summer over the next two transfer windows.
That would mean an additional £70m investment is arguably needed at Ibrox to turn things around after what’s been a woeful start to the 2025-26 campaign.
Rohl has inherited the squad that failed to perform under Russell Martin, who was sacked after 17 games in charge at the Glaswegian outfit.
McFarlane wrote on X on 6 November: “Rangers really are a nothing team. There’s so little there. Rohl totally hamstrung. Surely Cavenagh is looking at this and asking how this mess is even possible in light of a £35m summer spend. The same again will be required over the next two windows.”
The Gers’ defensive worries have continued under the German manager, with summer signing Nasser Djiga part of the problem against Roma.
The likes of Joe Rothwell, Thelo Aasgaard, Youssef Chermiti, Oliver Antman and Bojan Miovski have also failed to live up to expectations in G51.
Andrew Cavenagh to take major step before squad revamp at Ibrox
Thelwell and Patrick Stewart came under severe criticism at Ibrox as the Light Blues were losing to the Serie A giants.
Rangers fans are now taking aim at the sporting director and CEO after Martin’s sacking as the failures continue under Rohl.
| Players | Transfer fee |
| Youssef Chermiti | £8million |
| Oliver Antman | £3.5m |
| Thelo Aasgaard | £3.5m |
| Bojan Miovski | £2.6m |
| Emmanuel Fernandez | £2.5m |
While the former Sheffield Wednesday manager will be given time by supporters to find success at Ibrox, the same can’t be said about Thelwell and Stewart.
Cavenagh should look to replace the sporting director before the Glaswegian outfit make further investment in their squad, with improvements undoubtedly needed all over the pitch.
