‘That’s amazing’ – Alan Hutton and Ally McCoist stunned by what Rangers fans did at Ibrox vs Roma

Ally McCoist and Alan Hutton were blown away by the Rangers fans’ efforts to get the players up for the occasion against Roma.

Danny Rohl‘s men came into the Europa League clash at Ibrox looking to bounce back after Rangers were beaten 3-1 by Celtic at the weekend.

After a dreadful start to the season that has seen the Light Blues lose all three of their games in the competition under Russell Martin and Rohl they were also looking for their first Europa League points.

Doing their bit ahead of kick off the Gers supporters in the Copland Road Stand displayed a huge knight holding a Rangers shield, drawing the focus of the live TNT Sports broadcast.

Rangers fans knight tifo wows club legends

Pointing to the stands from pitch-side shortly before kick off TNT Sports presenter Emma Dodds highlighted the support from the fans, saying: “The Rangers players need to get this crowd going. If you just look behind you at the scenes here in the Copland Stand and the tifo that’s being displayed.

“They do so well here to get the atmosphere going. It’s been such a disappointing season so far but the players now need to get these fans on their feet.”

Ex-Gers full-back Hutton replied: “Absolutely, I mean that’s amazing, just look at that. The work and time and effort that goes into that. I always think it’s up to the players to entertain the fans. If you can do that, and get them off their seats and really enjoying it that’s what it’s all about.

“You can hear the atmosphere just lifting already so hopefully it’s a good game.”

In the commentary box shortly after club scoring record holder McCoist added: “Well I tell you, the first thing you’ve got to say is the display’s absolutely magnificent, it really is. It’s wonderful. If you’d come to be a bit earlier I was just videoing it for a couple of seconds there.

“But in all seriousness that’s marvellous and if the boys can replicate the level of commitment from the fans I don’t think we’ll be too far away.”

Rangers went behind in the 13th minute through Matías Soulé, turning in at the back post from a corner.

Rangers let down fans with early concession

On paper it was always going to be a tough task to get a positive result against a side that missed out on going joint top of Serie A with a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan at the weekend.

But Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have only won one of their three Europa League matches, and Rohl would surely have been hoping to at least keep things tight at the back in the early proceedings.

To go behind inside a quarter of an hour and in such a simplistic way – the near-post flick on from Lorenzo Pellegrini’s corner taking out their entire Rangers defence – will have annoyed the manager, and served to dampen an impressive atmosphere on a night where fans were looking to drive the side forward/
