Rod Stewart delights at Rangers ‘absolute madness’ drama

Rod Stewart has expressed his joy at the level of drama produced by Rangers and their carousel of managers in recent years.

Danny Rohl has taken over this term after Russell Martin was sacked from a nightmare Rangers tenure, to make it the fifth consecutive season where the man in the dug-out at Ibrox has been changed.

Celtic also have their own managerial drama this season after Brendan Rodgers’ resignation illuminated the regular chaos at Rangers, and famous Hoops fan Stewart wouldn’t have it any other way.

Celtic beat Rangers 3-1 in the Premier Sports Cup last weekend in the first Old Firm under Rohl in a controversial game where officiating decisions once again took centre stage, and Stewart saw enough at Hampden Park to believe the Light Blues finally have the right man in charge now.

Rod Stewart convinced Danny Rohl the right man for Rangers

In a phone call to talkSPORT’s Gers-supporting Jim White the singer said: “Going back to the way we beat you on Sunday, although I must admit your boys played terrifically well. I do think they’ve found the correct manager now.”

Reflecting on wider Old Firm drama White later asked: “It still intrigues me to this day. When I lived up there it was the same, even when I live down here it’s the same, the Old Firm, they never fail to surprise us do they?

“Brendan goes, back comes Martin [O’Neill]. At Rangers it looked like incoming was Steven Gerrard for a second time, then it was going to be Kevin Muscat, and now it’s Danny Rohl. At times some fans much stand back and scratch their heads.”

Stewart: “We both love Scottish football. It may not be the greatest in the world but we love it, and I think that all adds to the drama.

“It’s a madness. Absolute madness. How many managers have Rangers had in the last few years? I actually love it, mate, I think the drama is like a Shakespeare play. It’s wonderful.”

Rohl to carry Old Firm derby millstone like predecessors

The second-half fight-back from a man down in the cup defeat was a positive caveat to an otherwise poor result but only masked the issues that put the Light Blues in that position in the first place.

Thelo Aasaard’s red card for Rangers capped off a half which saw major failings in defence and up front dig a huge hole, even if Auston Trusty could himself have seen red after a boot to Jack Butland’s face.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale and Philippe Clement all struggled to get the best of their Glasgow rivals however well they did elsewhere, so Rohl will need to bounce back from his failed first attempt, first with a more solid performance from the off against Roma tonight, and then in his next meeting with Celtic.
