Rangers to revisit Lawrence Shankland transfer as January priority comes clear

Rangers simply need to sign a striker in January.

Despite November not even being a week old, Rangers are already looking as though they have next to nothing to play for.

Their Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic ended hopes of success in that competition, while a 14-point gap from Hearts in the league seems insurmountable, even at this stage.

However, if something is to come of the campaign, the addition of a goalscorer is going to be the priority, and the Gers may revisit a deal for Shankland.

Rangers could increase league title chances with Lawrence Shankland signing

Rangers were linked with Shankland in the summer, but failed in their efforts to bring the Scotsman to Ibrox.

Since then, Shankland has continued his impressive goalscoring record with 12 goal contributions in 15 appearances for Hearts.

Ibrox News revealed that a January exit for Youssef Chermiti could be on the cards, and if so, it would further amplify the need for a striker in the winter.

Shankland signed a new contract at Tynecastle in July, and while this would make a deal significantly harder, it’s a deal that makes far too much sense to ignore.

Not only would it massively strengthen the Light Blues’ attacking options, but it would also hurt Hearts’ chances of winning the league this season.

Via Edinburgh News, Robert Snodgrass labelled Shankland as a “top number nine”, and that is the one thing that the Gers are missing.

Lawrence Shankland transfer would transform Rangers

Shankland has more goals this season than all of Rangers’ strikers combined, and that speaks volumes about where their main concerns lie.

There are more, but their lack of threat in the final third has certainly been a huge reason behind their downfall this season.

Shankland thrives in just about every statistic this season, with Sofascore recording the Scotsman as having 2.7 shots per game.

This is more than Chermiti (0.7) and Bojan Miovski (1.3), who have managed just two league goals between them.

23 per cent of Shankland’s shots result in a goal, showcasing his clinical nature in front of goal, especially when considering how often he gets a shot away.

It won’t be an easy deal to do, but Rangers would be daft not to at least look into it.
