Kevin Thelwell decision locked in at Ibrox as Rangers seek yet another new hire

Rangers are on the lookout for a new director of football operations as yet another Ibrox hire is set to be made.

There has been a huge turnover of staff in key positions at Rangers in recent months, not least two new managers.

Kevin Thelwell was appointed as sporting director in the summer, joining after years of experience down south with Everton.

Thelwell has come under immense pressure at Ibrox due to some questionable decision making.

Among those strange decisions was Thelwell appointing son Robbie Thelwell, with that seen as an act of nepotism.

There appears to be no sign of Thelwell senior leaving Rangers anytime soon, though, if this latest job announcement is anything to go by.

Rangers on lookout for new director of football operations

Rangers have placed a job advert for a new director of football operations online, with the position currently open for applications to be made.

It mentions that the successful candidate will work closely with the sporting director, which is the role held by Thelwell.

The director of football operations will spread their work across first-team matters, also working closely with Danny Rohl and his squad, as well as the academy.

Rangers are set to bring in Jon Hunter-Barrett from Wolves as academy director, with that another figure well-known to Thelwell from English football.

Despite all the flames around him over the past four months or so, Thelwell has escaped scot free and will now oversee yet another hire.

What was Kevin Thelwell’s record like at Everton?

In a word, it was mixed. Thelwell kept Everton financially stable during a tough period for the Merseyside club off the pitch, coinciding with a move into a new state-of-the-art stadium.

While some good signings were made, plenty of poor ones also arrived at Goodison Park as it was at the time.

The major issue during Thelwell’s time at Everton was an inability to sign a half-decent striker. Sound familiar?

Thelwell was behind Youssef Chermiti’s big-money move from Everton to Rangers in the summer.

So bad has that move panned out, Chermiti could leave Rangers as early as January, according to Ibrox News sources.

Thelwell has not had the best starts to life in Glasgow, but he is here to stay and hopefully things slowly start to turn as more and more new faces arrive alongside him.
