Billy Dodds calls for ‘bomb scare’ Rangers player to be dropped vs Roma

Nasser Djiga has been the subject of extensive criticism since joining Rangers on loan in the summer transfer window, with Billy Dodds the latest to chime in.

Djiga has performed dreadfully for Rangers, yet under Danny Rohl he has featured prominently on the right of a back three.

Next up for the Bears is a huge clash against Roma, with Rohl looking to steer his side to a first Europa League win of the season.

Billy Dodds was the assistant manager under Barry Ferguson at the end of 2024-25 , and believes that Djiga must be dropped against Roma if Rangers want to revive their Europa League campaign.

Nasser Djiga has underwhelmed massively for Rangers

The 22-year-old defender joined Rangers on a loan deal from Wolves and has struggled with life at Ibrox so far.

Journalist Mark Guidi believes Djiga could cause problems if Rangers are serious about mounting a title challenge this season, and his red card against Dundee on 9 August showcased his inability to play at this level.

Djiga also faced criticism from Ally McCoist following his dismal display in the 6-0 loss to Club Brugge.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show Podcast on 6 November, Dodds was the latest to question Djiga’s involvement in the starting lineup.

He said: “Against Celtic, it was the first time I’ve really seen him, and I thought he was a bomb scare.

“I think he can move Tavernier to centre-back against Roma to help control the big striker [Artem] Dovbyk.”

While it’s easy to be critical, Djiga showed glimpses of promise against Hibernian, and he seems like a defender who is clearly lacking confidence in the big games.

In the 3-1 defeat to Celtic on Sunday, the Burkina Faso international looked completely out of his depth, and the game against Roma is equally important for Rangers’ season.

Rohl has been warmly welcomed by the Gers supporters, and a win against Roma would do huge things for his reputation with the fans.

Danny Rohl can claim first significant win as Rangers manager vs Roma

Rohl has made a positive impact in Govan, yet there is a desperate need for a statement win to kickstart his era.

Having lost 3-0 to Brann in their last Europa League match, Rangers have zero points from their opening three matches, and the former Sheffield Wednesday manager is desperate to excel in the competition.

With a trip to Porto also on the horizon, it’s crucial that Thursday’s match ends in all three points.

It could be a turning point not just in Rohl’s managerial career, but in Rangers’ underwhelming campaign.
