Russell Martin could now have pick of two jobs despite ‘disastrous’ Rangers spell

Russell Martin is ready to jump straight back into management, just a month on from the end of his dismal Rangers tenure.

Rangers sacked Martin at the start of October, after he had led his squad to just five wins from his 17 games in charge.

Decision-makers at Ibrox had settled on the former Southampton boss in the summer, hoping he would hit the ground running amid a busy transfer window.

But scenes had turned ugly by the end, with Martin requiring a police escort to leave the Falkirk Stadium after yet another Scottish Premiership game ended without victory.

Rangers have since hired Danny Rohl, with the German leading the Gers to consecutive victories in his first two league games.

Championship clubs consider Russell Martin

Martin has been touted for the Wolves job, with current manager Vitor Pereira under huge pressure at Molineux.

It would be a surprise to see the ex-Scotland international handed a chance to return to the Premier League, however, with both of his recent jobs ending in ugly fashion.

At Southampton last season, it was a similar story. Martin had got the Saints into the top-flight playing progressive, out from the back football, but refused to shift his approach even when it was clear that the system was not working.

His side would lose 13 of their 16 Premier League games before decision-makers at St Mary’s Stadium decided to go in a different direction.

Southampton were relegated but could now seek to reunite with their former manager, Alan Nixon reported on his Patreon on Sunday.

Despite what was described as a “disastrous” spell at Rangers, he is keen on a quick return to the dugout.

Alongside Southampton, who have endured a poor start to the season under Will Still, Norwich City, where Martin spent time in his playing days, could also consider the 39-year-old if results do not improve under Liam Manning.

Somehow, he could have his pick of two jobs.

Russell Martin yet to speak following Rangers’ departure

Such were the circumstances in which Martin was sacked from Rangers’ tumultuous, he has yet to speak.

By the end, much of the anger had spilt away from the manager and was subsequently directed at Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell.

That anger remains, bubbling under the surface and ready to re-emerge should Rohl‘s appointment not pan out the way it has started.

Martin will inevitably talk about his time at Ibrox eventually, but right now, the 39-year-old will be understandably keen to put the last four months behind him.
