Danny Rohl in ‘unique’ position not seen at Rangers since 2012 ahead of Celtic showdown

Danny Rohl is starting to find form at Rangers already after replacing Russell Martin.

Rohl can be forgiven for the dreadful 3-0 loss at Brann only a couple of days into his tenure, with wins against Kilmarnock and Hibernian secured since.

Now, the German can take his popularity to new levels as Rangers prepare to face Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final on 2 November.

It is a chance for Rohl to use the history that is going in his favour already.

Danny Rohl in unseen Rangers position after Celtic drama

Celtic are in disarray at this moment, despite their recent win over Falkirk, with Dermot Desmond publicly calling out Brendan Rodgers after his exit.

Hugh Keevins has shared how all of that will play into the hands of Rohl, who is said to be in the most unique of positions at Ibrox, ahead of the Hampden showdown.

Writing in the print edition of the Sunday Mail on 2 November, Keevins explained how everything has changed for those in blue in a matter of weeks.

He wrote: “Rohl finds himself in a unique position at Hampden because no Rangers manager or head coach has, since the club came out of liquidation in 2012, assumed that role when Celtic were the club in crisis.

“All that Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha, Steven Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale and Philippe Clement ever knew were Celtic in the ascendancy.

“All that Rangers fans knew were record defeats to Celtic at Ibrox and a litany of losses elsewhere by a variety of embarrassing margins.”

What Keevins did miss out, however, is that hasn’t been the case in terms of results for a long while now.

Rangers have massive upperhand on Celtic in recent years

Celtic have failed to beat Rangers in normal time in their five previous outings.

Clement saw his Light Blues smash their local rivals 3-0 at Ibrox back in January, before Barry Ferguson did the same in a 3-2 victory last time out at Parkhead.

Rangers should have won the last Scottish Cup final too, if not for the disgraceful Vaclav Cerny non-penalty decision in extra-time from the officials in charge.

With the last two Ibrox showdowns ending in drab draws, fans from both sides of Glasgow will be hoping for more excitement at Hampden Park, even if fewer tickets were available.

Rangers and Rohl are in form, for the standard seen at Ibrox this season, with two wins on the bounce ahead of weirdly facing Martin O’Neill in charge of the Hoops.

Let’s hope there are more celebrations in blue on the streets of Glasgow later on Sunday, knowing a Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren is on the calendar.
