Steven Gerrard finally breaks silence on Rangers job as he confirms why he rejected return

Steven Gerrard was the prime candidate for the Rangers job before he pulled out of the race.

Gerrard is a fan favourite at Rangers after leading the Govan club to the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title.

However, talks broke down and Gerrard did not become the new Rangers boss, and the job instead went to Danny Rohl.

The 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh have caught a lot of flak for their failure to bring Gerrard back, but it may not have been their fault.

Steven Gerrard confirms why he never took the Rangers role

Gerrard had concerns over the Rangers job due to the timing, and he has now confirmed why he did not take the vacancy.

The ex-Liverpool star admitted he still has love for the Gers, and he will watch on from afar, but he felt like he was not ready to return.

Speaking live on TNT Sports on 1 November, he said: “In terms of Rangers, very close.

“I had some really positive and interesting talks with the owners. It felt a bit rushed to me because I had my family in Bahrain at the time. I had a lot to think about and a short space of time to give a decision.

“There was a few things that I was uncertain about. And if I’m going to take a challenge that big and that important, I’ve got that affection and that connection with Rangers. For me to take that on again, it had to be perfect and I had to be 100 per cent ready.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t due to the timing, so I stepped aside and I wish them all the best. They’re got a fantastic manager now. I’ll watch as a fan from afar and I wish them all the best, certainly tomorrow in the Old Firm game.”

Why Gerrard could still return to Rangers one day

Gerrard still clearly cares about the Gers, and surely, when the timing is right, he will fancy a return to Auchenhowie.

He is reportedly planning to return to the United Kingdom, as Alan Nixon claimed in October, that he is set to move back to Merseyside.

Gers fans may hope that they never have to call on Gerrard again, as that would mean that Rohl has done badly enough to be dismissed from the role and their team would be in a dire situation again.

However, if it came to it, and the former Sheffield Wednesday man lost his position, then Gerrard would be the name on most supporters’ lips.

Clearly, he would be willing to take over if the timing was right, given his comments about the reasons why he rejected the return this time around.

If he does return to the UK, and the Light Blues need a new boss in the near future, they will surely approach him again.
