Kevin Thelwell fingerprints everywhere as Rangers close in on another big-position hire

Kevin Thelwell did not take long to flex his muscles after being appointed as Rangers’ sporting director over the summer.

Thelwell, who joined from Everton, helped oversee the appointment of Russell Martin as manager and his subsequent firing.

Danny Rohl has since been hired at Ibrox, while a number of other appointments have been made either side.

That includes Thelwell appointing son Robbie as head of recruitment in a decision that did not go down well among the fanbase.

Jon Hunter-Barrett is now joining as academy director at Ibrox – another figure Thelwell knows well from his time at Wolves.

And Thelwell will also now have a big say on yet another new hire at Rangers, with Rohl closing in on a new first-team coach to join him.

Kevin Thelwell to have say in Rangers’ new first-team coach

Rohl has yet to appoint a right-hand man at Ibrox, despite being in the position for a week-and-a-half now.

However, the German confirmed at his pre-Celtic press conference on Friday that an appointment is close and will come as late as the upcoming international break.

Rohl added that it is important he sits down with Thelwell before deciding on who will become his right-hand man.

While the role of sporting director is of course to oversee signings and coaching appointments, it is a little worrying that Thelwell’s fingerprints are on every last deal.

Rohl surely knows who he wants to join him at Ibrox, and exactly why Thelwell has to have a say on the matter is anyone’s guess.

Rohl already fixing Russell Martin errors

Rohl’s tenure started with defeat to Brann in the Europa League, but Rangers have followed that up with back-to-back league wins.

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl has already fixed errors made by Russell Martin, with the German showing he is not afraid to make some big calls.

Rangers have a massive showdown with Celtic to come at Hampden Park on Sunday, but belief will be high that the Gers can come away from that contest victorious.

There are finally signs of some momentum growing, and Rohl’s grip on this side will only grow more once he has his full backroom staff around him.
