James McFadden shares Derek Cornelius injury fear vs Celtic after what he saw in Rangers commentary

Derek Cornelius may be an injury doubt for Rangers against Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.

Danny Rohl’s team travel to Hampden Park on 2 November, with the historic stadium set to host the second Old Firm derby of the season.

Celtic are going through a mini crisis after Brendan Rodgers’ resignation, and the Gers will surely hope to take advantage of it.

Cornelius started for the Light Blues against Hibernian at Easter Road on 29 October, as they won back-to-back games in the William Hill Premiership, but the Canadian centre-back was replaced by Emmanuel Fernandez in the 89th minute, leading to a bit of a scare.

Derek Cornelius injury doubts emerge for Celtic vs Rangers

James McFadden wonders whether Cornelius will be fit enough to start for the Gers against Celtic.

The ex-forward, who was commentating on the game at Easter Road, saw the 27-year-old centre-back suffer a swollen eye in the 1-0 win as he was forced to come off towards the end.

With the Olympique Marseille loanee playing a key role for the Glaswegian outfit in recent matches, his potential absence will be a significant blow for Rohl.

Speaking on Open Goal on 30 October, McFadden said: “Cornelius came off, didn’t he? His eye was swollen. So whether he’s fit or not, I’m not sure.”

Nasser Djiga proved his worth against Hibernian, and the German manager will be confident about starting him against Celtic.

However, the Gers lack options when it comes to left-footed centre-backs, and fans will hope Cornelius’ knock isn’t serious.

Danny Rohl could hand player first start of season vs Celtic

Rohl has shown he’s different from Russell Martin, with the former Sheffield Wednesday boss flexible in his approach to the game.

It looks like every Rangers player has a clean slate under the German manager, giving Clinton Nsiala some hope at Ibrox.

The former AC Milan youngster was bombed out of the first team by Martin, but he’s been seen in training since Rohl’s arrival.

With Nsiala one of the rare left-footed centre-backs at the Light Blues, the 36-year-old may think about handing the defender his first start of the season against Celtic.
