What Martin O’Neill has said about Danny Rohl at Rangers after bombshell Celtic return
Danny Rohl won’t be coming up against Brendan Rodgers afterall this season.
Rangers got their first win under Rohl when they beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at Ibrox on Sunday, with goals from Derek Cornelius, Danilo and Youssef Chermiti sealing the points..
However, a massive bombshell has been dropped very close to Rangers‘ Old Firm clash in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final on Sunday, as Rodgers resigned from Celtic on Monday.
Rohl had been given the perfect blueprint to beat Celtic after Hearts displayed a masterclass in counter-attacking football when they beat the Hoops 3-1 on Sunday, but now it’s all changed.
Martin O’Neill has now taken over as Celtic’s interim boss in time for the clash against Rangers, as the Parkhead icon recently voiced his opinion on Rohl.

Martin O’Neill pointed out Danny Rohl’s lack of experience
It may be fair to say that Rangers took an educated gamble when they appointed Rohl, given his young age of 36 and lack of experience as a head coach.
Despite this, Rohl had glowing reviews as he impressed in stints as a coach with the German national team, as well as Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, which obviously boosted his CV.
- Rohl joined Bayern Munich in 2019 as an assistant coach under Niko Kovac
- He then worked alongside Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich after Kovac’s departure
- Flick then brought Rohl to the German national team, where he worked from 2021-2023
- Rohl has often cited how much of an impact Flick had on his own philosophy
On 20 October, O’Neill was on talkSPORT discussing Rangers’ decision to pursue Rohl, as he explained why the German’s lack of experience may actually benefit him in the long run.
O’Neill said: “I think they’ll know much less about Rohl, and may be prepared to give him a chance.
“He’s only had the one managerial job, Sheffield Wednesday; he has been an assistant.
“Overall, because they know less about him in that sense, they might be prepared to say, ‘yeah, this is it’.”
Rohl now has a huge opportunity to put his lack of experience to the test when he faces an experienced O’Neill on Sunday, in what is the biggest stage right now.
Rangers’ chances of Old Firm victory have been boosted
Rangers fans will know O’Neill well from his previous tenure as Celtic boss, where the Northern Irishman was successful with the Hoops from 2000-2005.
Since then, O’Neill’s managerial career went on a downward spiral, with his last job lasting just a few months with Nottingham Forest in 2019.
| Job | Length |
| Aston Villa | August 2006 – August 2010 |
| Sunderland | December 2011 – March 2013 |
| Ireland national team | November 2013 – November 2018 |
| Nottingham Forest | January 2019 – June 2019 |
Rangers’ clash with Celtic will showcase how modernised tactics stack up against more traditional, simpler methods.
Rohl will be licking his lips at the opportunity to capitalise on the current crisis that Celtic are in, as Rangers may soon lift silverware this season after all.
